Used axles

I'm picking up a used Dana 30 and 35 with 3.73 gears and was wondering what I should watch out for when buying used axles. The Dana 30 has 40,000 mi and Dana 35 has 60,000 mi on the. Thanks a ton for your guys' advice!

FYI I'm looking into new axles because I have 3.07 gears which aren't pristine for larger tires and regearing is pretty expensive

Open the covers and make sure all the teeth are good. That is the big thing to look for.

Look at the spiders and the ring&pinion. Make sure theres no chowdered teeth. Wouldnt hurt to pull the axles and look at the splines. Maybe clean em up a bit.

What he said. If you've got or are planning 33" tires you'll likely end up regearing from 3.73 to 4.56 or 4.88 later anyway. May want to bite the bullet and regear your current axles versus buying another set of axles to regear.

Guy here who sold the dana 30 to OP! The D30 was pulled off my DD LJ after I installed my HPD30. It had about 60k miles on it, not 40k. There should be nothing wrong with it as before I took it off it was driving me from school and back. Reason I swapped axles was because I found a good deal on a built HPD30. Also remember that if you ever need to use the spare axle shaft I gave you, to take off the unit bearing on the end. The unit bearing on the spare shaft is toast.

Also nice meeting you, hopefully Ill see you around on some runs posted on the CA section of the forum!
