I was just curious what my Jeep might be worth and starting entering some criteria on Autotrader. I have an 05 Unlimited with auto and hard top and barely over 60,000 miles.
For search criteria I entered 04-06 Wrangler Unlimited, under 75,000 miles, under $20,000, with automatic, and within 300 miles of where I am in TX. There are three for sale matching that criteria.
Then I upped the price cap and discovered two rag tops over
$20k, one in San Antonio with 36k miles at a hair under $24k$.
Wow! These babies hold their value!
I guess you have to be a cash buyer or have a substantial down payment to buy one because they book for so much less, like $14,425 for mine on NADA right now. A dealer friend of mine told me a while back that the book value doesn't mean a thing on older Jeep Wranglers.
In NC, if it is clean, you could easily see an asking price of $17 +. Stealerships around here are asking about $15k for older models with twice the miles. Of course they finance and probably can get that.
I just can't see $20 k on a TJ like that but if folks pay, go for it!
I am looking for a used TJ and I would have no issue paying good money for one. My issue is flinging one that's not a rust bucket up here in Chicago. I can't justify going south to get one.

Oh, I don't think mine is worth 20 grand. That was just the price cap for the search criteria that I used for months before finding mine. I think I actually got a great deal on my LJ at just cents over book.
Depending on repairs, this could be one of those vehicles with a real low cost of ownership, kind of like older Dodge diesels and Toyota FJs. They just hold their value quite well because of the demand for them.
