V8 conversion

What would be the best and cheapest engine to replace my old 4.0 with? I'm wanting a v8 and I don't know anything about engine prices or what I need to get a v8 to work in a 2000 jeep wrangler sport

look into the 5.2 and 5.9 magnum conversions. they seem to be popular, and cheaper than most others. Chevy 5.3 and 5.7s are common too.

This is a response I made and copied from a similar thread.

You need to decide on a few things before anyone can give you a straight answer.

1. What V8? GM LS? 5.7 Hemi, Dodge Magnum? What type of transmission? Each engine will require a different build plan.
2. How much are you willing/able to spend?
3. Have you already upgraded your axles? A Dana 35 aint gonna do it.
4. Do you have the tools and ability to to this yourself or are you having it professionally done?
5. What type of inspection/emmissions standards do you have to meet?
6. Have you done any research on whats actually involved in doing a V8 conversion?

Put some answers to these questions and you'll get a better response from those of us who have done it.

There is only one federal law regarding engine swaps. The engine must be from the same year or newer. Additionally, if you plan to pass inspection most states will require an obd2 scan so it is wise to pull all of the wiring/computer and all underhood engine accessories from a donor. You will also need to replace the rear axle and its likely you will need new driveshafts. Novak and painless wiring have some additional info on their sites, my best guess is that you will land closer to the 10k range. If it is being professionally done the highest cost will likely be in the labor for wiring.

You can do the 5.9 Magnum possibly at a shop for the $5k budget. Be sure to use someone who has done it before and that knows all the required details.
