Thumbs down Very Slow JEEP -- HELP!!!

I need some help. About one week ago I purchased a 2002 Jeep wrangler (soft top - 4 cyl engine) the jeep has 50000 miles on it what I think is about a 6 in lift and some 35 size tires. I have found the jeep to be extremely slow, it picks up ok but it will not go over 40-45 mph and after a while maybe 50-55 mph I have changed the oil on the car, spark plugs and wires, had injectors clean and changed air filter. Before I do a major investment and further change anything on the jeep I want to know if this is normal or what might my jeep have. I know it might be a heavy car for a 4 cyl but I think it is very slow. Please I need some help!!

Actually Jeeps are light weight. A little over 2k lbs. What size tires does it have?

Did you install the lift and tires? If not I'm guessing that they never regeared the axles. Regearing the axles to 4.88 gears should help out quite a bit. Expect about $1000 or a little more to get this done at a decent shop. Is it an automatic?

Actually - they are closer to 4K Its the damn heavy frame.

you do know that you will have to do a re-gear with the lift and tires right? X2, what size are the tires your running now

No I bought the jeep already like this and actually it's not a 6 in lift its only 4 in lift but the tires are 35" and already installed. It is manual transmission, I don't think anyone regeared the axles. Should there be any reason for me to believe that this is occuring because my fuel pump or filter is not working properly or dirty??? Thanks.

i agree with bluvking...for a 4cyl i would do 5.13. if it was the 6cyl i would do 4.88

4" with 35's, you have any pictures? I was thinking about doing that set-up with a tera-flex kit. I would really like to see a front and side view if you have some.

Jeeps are not known for passing in traffic. Not to mention the 4 cylinders..... and then with a lift and big tires on top of that.... You cant see the problem here? lol

Lets put a weed whip on a harley and see what happens....

You are thinking of a much older CJ with that kind of light weight. You won't find any Wrangler TJs much under 3300 lbs or so, mine weighed 4200 lbs. the last time I weighed it on a certified truck scale. His 2.5L SE will be much lighter than my 4200 lbs. but it'll still be well over 3,000 lbs.

So far as why the OP's 2.5L won't accelerate, it's due to the combination of the 2.5L engine, 35" tires, and stock 4.11 gearing.

He can't regear to 5.13 gears, the lowest ratio available for his Dana 35c and Dana 30 is 4.88 which will be MUCH better. 5.13 would be more appropriate for those 35" tires and his 4-banger but without new f/r axles, that won't happen.

The TJ D30 wont, but the JK D30 will.

He'd need new axle in the front if he wanted 5.13's.

Plus I don't think anyone makes TJ 5.13's for a D35... it would be a waist of time and money. If your running tires that big to need 5.13's... you'll end up breaking something on take off

My 97 with 2.5 and 5 speed, 4:10's is useless in 5th on any hills and thats with 30x9.50's I can't imagine what 35's would be like.

Yep, you've gotta bad combo of tire size, gears and the "Lo-Output" 2.5! Simple fix is new gears, might also consider selling of those 35's going w/ something a little more practical. With the lift you have, 33's on some nice light steelies would probably help w/ you issue some, but in the end, you will most likely need to regear. As it is, I'm surprised you haven't broken anything running those 35's on an otherwise stock jeep.

Yeah have a 97 2.5l with 4" lift and 33" tires and I can get about 55mph on the highway unless im going down a hill then I can go about 62mph. But I have low gearing so it doesnt help to much. I just try to avoid highways and use the off ramp if I can but if I need to use the hightway, the slow lane works for me. But like everyone else says fixing your gears is the only way to help, and the 35" dont help at all. Good luck getting your rig faster.

I'm the same as him, except I have a performance intake and power chip. I can hit 70mph on the freeway on flat land. I'm gonna add a new muffler for high flow, and new high grade spark plugs with the hope of hitting 75 mph. BTW when my jeep was 100% stock I could only hit 80 mph on freeway flat land. If i were you, I sell those 35" tires, and buy some good 33" ones on black steelies. that should help lots with speed, and they won't break your axle over the next year or two.

WHAT?! - You should have been able to peg the needle if it was 100% stock. My TJ(4.0L auto) was easily able to pull all the way to 85 when stock.

I would go find/barrow some smaller tires for a test run. See if that helps the top speed before I spent money on any changes.
