Vibrations and shimmy at highway speeds

Since mounting my new 31" goodyear wrangler duratrac tires I've been getting serious vibrations when doing about 60-65 mph. I know in most cases this is a balancing issue and I've already had the tires rebalanced and the problem remains. What can be done about this? Or is this something I just have to get used to?

Did you already get an alignment when you had the tires balanced?

hey black metal i have the same issue. mine is a shake at 55-65ish. i have had the tires balanced and aligned. replaced the front sway bar bushings and end links. still have the same shake/shimmy. i did find that my front driveshaft u joint is slightly bad(little click in it) but could also be the rotors. so let me know if you find anything. i am going to keep checking.

Yes I've had the alignment done and balanced twice already and the problem remains. And yeah i feel it from 55-65 mph it's so annoying. I let you know if I find anything

cool i just drove my tj with this problem for about 4 hours and i was ready to drive to a dealership and trade it for any damn thing they had......GOD it suck. i am going to try and get new u joints and will let you know what i find....good luck to you...

Jeeps being the short wheel base that they are..that helps them so much when off road..... wobbles/ shimmys are more noticeable IMO......assuming the tires wheels are good (no bent rims) or poorly made tires (not likely Duratracs) keep checking the suspension and steering components....do you have a lift?

Just trying to help..may wanna check the death wobble thread lot of information that thread. May have to wade through a lot of opinions.

I have had a "wobble" however not the DW so many speak of ....balanced/ rotated/ reset tire pressure = fixed the problem...never really knew which one it was.

I have shake that comes n at 52 MPH on up to ? Changed front rotors, all U joints, balanced tires, still there.Took it to the dealer today and he found the right rear axle had a slight bend. So I'm looking for an axle. Will let U know if it helps my case. That is if I can figure out how to post on this site?? I have a 97 with 2.5, auto...

I was having the same problem with vibrations/shimmies and had my tires 'balanced.' I put balanced in quotes because the original place had the front tires 3 ounces out of balance! I took it to a mechanic I trust ( should have done that from the start) and discovered the balance issue and its been 100% better.

But others have mentioned good possibilities as well- u joints, track bar/bushings. As far as alignment I believe the only thing you can adjust on a tj is the toe in- as long as its accurate you should be fine there.

My two cents from experience- just because a shop says tires are balanced doesnt mean they are. A lot of places have inexperienced techs doing stuff like that or people that just dont care/ want to make the extra effort to balance a larger tire.

Same problem with my new Duratracs. My vibration is at about 65. I went with load E tires. Could that be the culprit?

I have found with other cars that road-force balancing makes a huge difference. I suspect I'll be going down that path but it's annoying to have to spend more after just buying 5 new tires, paying for upgraded alignment, etc.

I had to make a relatively quick decision, the jeep wouldn't pass inspection without tires. It seemed from the threads I read that the C rated tires cut easily and I think the difference was $100 total so I went with the E's. It's not a daily driver so ride concerns were minimal but this highway vibration thing will get old fast.... The unevenly worn MTR's that the jeep had on it when I got it were better at 70. Back to the tire shop this am- hopefully it's just balance.

I've had the same problem ever since I bought my jeep. There were new 31's on it when a bought it. there was a bad shimmy a 55ish that got progressively worse within the last year. I really don't get the jeep up to that speed too often so I kind of ignored it. But now that I've decided to tackle it, this is what I've done:

I replaced the tie rod end that attaches to the pitman arm first (better but still wobbled bad at 55).

Changed steering stabilizer to beefed up one. (again, better but still there). Also, I noticed there was some slop in the mounting bolt of the bracket and changed that out with a 1/2" diameter bolt.

So, I said screw it, and instead of paying for the alignment, I got the wheels balanced again. I took it to Just Tires and the they said all of the wheels where off about 3-4 oz. total. Now there is absolutely no wobble/shimmy!!!! (i was watching them and noticed the machine was a coats 1500 if that helps)

So, I hope that helps a little. maybe you should take the balancing elsewhere

Thanks for the input and if anyone finds anything just post it here. I've heard about that road force balancing sounds reliable. I don't have a lift and my tire pressure is around 33 -35 psi. Also my steering stabilizer is fairly new but i don't know if it is any good or if That even matters

I have similar problem with shake at 52 MPH and up. Dealer found rt rear (axle) half shaft has a slight bend. Waiting for parts will post results.

That solved my problem. Driver's rear threw a weight. All good now to 75 mph. Very happy with dura tracs so far.

Something else to check is your lug nuts and the lug holes esp if you have aftermarket lug nuts for whatever reason.

I too had vibrations and shimmy around 49/52 on acceleration/braking. Thought it was just a bad balance and/or tires from not being rotated properly, but after numerous alignments and balances discount tire finally caught the problem. Previous owner installed aftermarket lug nuts with the key feature and the lip/draft on the lug nut was too small causing the lug hole to warp, get bigger, and groove. Eventually the lug nuts would of gone through the lug hole on the wheel and I'd be riding trike style (obviously worst case scenerio). Sooo check the lug hole on the wheels...

Question here. The "beefed" up stabilizer, which one did you choose? Also the sloppy fitting mounting bolt. Was that on the new stabilizer connection? Thanks.

Not sure if this applies here......and assuming everything else under there is tight and correct.

My wobble culprit was the cheapo black steel D-window wheels I was running. It was extremely hard for the tire store to keep them balanced. They have to know what they are doing beyond throwing a tire on a Honda car. It may take spinning the tire on the wheel because they are just not true. They would get them as close as perfect as they could, then I would air down and wheel it. The problems would start all over again. Like the soft metal changed shape or something.

Anyway, all problems would disappear when I slapped my set of Rubi wheels and 245/75/16 AT tires on that I ran in the winter.

I finally said "Fuggit", and sold the crappy steel wheels and went to alloy. I have never had that problem since. She drives wobble/shimmy free at all speeds. Even after many many offroading trips. Even after going to 35" tires.

I will never run steel wheels on a Jeep again.

That's good to hear I'm really hoping that's all I'll have to do. Where I work the techs don't do much work on jeeps especially with all terrain tires.

I am also curious about which stabilizer you went with. My boss (i work at a shop) is trying to get me to go with a new stabilizer but mine isnt that old.
