If you want a lot.. you're not going to get it with 200 bucks intake. If you want just noticeable difference, then bigger throttle body, intake, chip and exhaust will do the trick for ya however you have to do all of them, not just 1 and then judge like many of the people that will reply in a day or two.

If your looking for more speed, the Jeeps areodynamics are killing speed, otherwise if your looking for something bolt-on, theres a few companies that make bolt on super-chargers for the 4.0

stroker is gonna be the best bang for your buck. and it has better torque and horsepower numbers than a normal chevy 350 you would swap in. when it comes to that motor, like already said, you can regear and it will pop off the line, and all the other performance mods will yield slightly noticeable results

You can stroke the 4.0 into a 4.6 or 4.7, you can supercharge the 4.0, you can replace the 4.0 with another motor, fuel injected Chevy V8 is a good swap.

Those will all increase torque, speed, and acceleration.

You can change your gears in your axles but that will only help acceleration.

An aluminum block Chevy V8 with a 4L60E trans behind it will be lighter and give you better gas mileage than the 4.0, well if you can keep your foot off the floorboards.

Id just stroke the 4.0 and call it a day, well maybe a few days anyway. But a stroked I6 will give you the power and torque your looking for and everything will bolt right back where it goes.

i really wouldn't stroke it to a 5.0. i don't know how reliable it would be. you would be taking out a lot of the inner cylinder strength. i haven't looked into sleeves yet.

Stroking to a 5.0 is very doable but you need to have the block ultra sonicaly tested before you do that so that they can determine if your block has enough material to bore from the cylinder. That is a pretty expensive process to have it checked like that. You also need a custom ground crankshaft and other very expensive parts. But that is as big as you can take a 4.0. It will also cost you around $3500+ in parts and block work and thats if you build the whole thing yourself. Id really suggest just stroking it to a 4.7L because that is much less of a headache and easier on the wallet for sure.

they make an after market head for the 4.0 bolting it on gives you +50 hp. only down fall it that it cost $4000. i think stroking my motor to 4.6 is and will be within my budget by the end of the year. hopefully next year during the winter season my jeep will come completely apart and i can do a ground up. clean the frame really well and get a fresh coat of powder on it then replace all the bushings with the prothene ones, degrease the motor really well and have the trans case inspected made a tera low kit installed. the possibilities are endless as you already know. i just wish i had more money so i could get the instant gratification now. lol

As much as the American in me wants to believe that, it just isn't true. Look at Ferrari's and Lambo's, a small V8 with a ton of power.

I would personally do a V8 swap over stroking the motor. The I6 already gets bad mileage for its displacement, my 4.0 OHV Ford Ranger got around 18 mpg's and it was faster than my Jeep. I have been checking around at various junkyards and you can find a good, 40K to 75K mileage Chevy 5.3 for around 900-1000$ out of a 1500 series truck. Or you can get the 350 (5.7) out of a Suburban/Express/
Silverado for about the same price... WITH A WARRANTY! Then buy a complete conversion kit for 1200-1400$ and do the labor in your garage. Go to Novak Jeep Conversions - Home and they will tell you everything you need to know. They make it very easy because they only do swaps for Jeeps and they have a huge knowledge base on their web site. Here's a very complete installation guide into a TJ, and they have them for just about every other Jeep made. Within the next couple years I will be buying a beater car and doing this swap, if your doing the work, why not go big and be happy. (BTW people who have done these small-block GM v8 swaps typically get around 16 mpg city... pretty good for 280+HP and 335ft-lbs TQ!!)

Anyone know what kind of gas mileage you can expect from a stroked 4.7? If the stock bore gets 15 avg. I can't imagine what it would get stroked.

I'm willing to bet that a 5.3 GM or a 5.2 Dodge will get significantly better mpg's. Plus you'll have a V8!! What kind of American would turn that down!?!?
