warn vr8000 winch

Anybody know anything about this winch? 4wd.com has it for $479.99. Then warn has a rebate for $80.00. Plus its free shipping. Not too bad for the price.

Brand new line. I am not sure anyone has has too much experience with them yet, but it is a Warn so how bad can it be?

The only thing I know is the warranty is the same as other warn winches & for $400 the price is right.

I am with you on this. For me, getting Warn quality and warranty for $400 is worth it. I have not done much for trails yet, but i want to be prepared when I get the chance.

Don't forget: there is no such thing as a free lunch. If the $479 VR8000 was the same quality as the $931 M8000, it would have the same price. The only way to substantially cut the price is to use--wait for it--cheaper components. Why else would Warn use terms like "entry level" and "best value" when describing the VR line?

I know we're all a bunch of cheap bastards--myself included--but there are a few places where I feel you should not cut corners. A winch is one of them. But maybe that's just me.

Mercedes has various prices and models of their automobiles too... does that mean it's not any good if it's not their top of the line S Class?

(sigh)

Do you honestly think there is no substantial difference between a $36,000 C300 and a $150,000 CL63 AMG coupe? Do you really feel the C300 doesn't use cheaper materials compared to the CL63, or that there is no quantitative reason for Mercedes to charge so much more for the CL63 compared to their entry-level C300?

Back on topic: if the VR8000 really were internally identical to the M8000, why would Warn have needed to introduce an all-new "value" model to replace it? Why wouldn't they just cut the M8000's price tag in half and continue on their way?

Come on, Jerry. I know you're much smarter than that.

Who said the VR8000 was identical to the M8000? Anyone? Did I say that? Nope. But with Warn's name on it and Warn's Lifetime mechanical and One Year electrical warranty, I'm certainly not worried about the new VR series degrading Warn's reputation.

A silver ring will hold up just as long as a gold ring. If you can't afford gold, a well made silver ring will perform quite admirably.

And it's not a matter of "being smarter than that".

I agree, while I'm positive the VR series aren't as high of quality as the more expensive winches, it doesn't mean they are as poor of quality as a chinese import either. Also, line speed and other things could cause the price to be cheaper.

I'll agree with you there: I'd trust a Warn VR8000 before any other (insert non-Warn brand name here) winch. Nevertheless, I'd still prefer to run the heavier-duty components and stronger capability of one of their more rugged models. I'm partial to the XD9000i.

Who the heck pays $931 for an M8000? Last I checked, the going rate if $539, sometimes with free shipping.

I was quoting prices right off of Warn's own web site.

odds are its just a marketing scheme like everything else is in the world these days, both products are made with the same quality parts more than likely, maybe a couple short cuts but in the end its gonna hold up to warns reputation they probably just need sales

*previous post* agreed, they'll make more money selling for less. Only way to compete in the market now...people like me will buy it, love it, then when it breaks I'll for sure buy the best warn on the market down the road cause they sold me on the first! assuming it's a good winch (VR8000)

Andy from Warn stated this about the differences between the VR and M series winches:

Quote:
Just to clear some things up:

- The VR winches are designed, engineered, and assembled here in Oregon using parts from around the world (including some made in Oregon).

- Limited Lifetime Warranty is the same as all of our other truck winches.

- Linespeed on the VR is slower than the M-series.

- Motor, linespeed, remote, finish, and controls (solenoid vs. contactor) are the differences between the VR and the M.

Hope this helps. Feel free to call our Customer Serivce team directly at 1-800-543-9276 (7-4 PST, M-F).

- Andy

I'd say Warn is just offering a "hobbyist" grade of their "professional" grade winch.

Not everyone is out winching every day, some it's a once a month or year thing.

So a lower priced version for those folks is just another way to get them to buy a Warn, vs the China stuff.

So it may be a little slower, load time percentage may be a little less before it needs to cool down. But hey, in the end, it's job is to get you unstuck.

Just like buying your Jeep, kinda silly to buy a Rubi, when your idea of off road is a dirt road. A plain old 4 banger SE will do the same job on that road.

You are still getting the same warranty, customer service and all that history of R&D.

Agreed, however I beleive most of the other warns are much closer to being made and assembled here... not sure if they are 100% but I think alot more so. But, with that comes a higher price. Not knocking it, its still a warn.
