Washers vs. Spacers for tires

Ordered my 31" bfg's for my stock tj. I know they won't rub much, but I thought I heard someone say you could use washers in place of spacers. If so, how do I go about doing that? Is there welding involved?

Washers can be put under the bolts on the steering stops to reduce how much the front wheels can turn at full lock.
This will also reduce the turning circle but I've really only noticed when full-lock turning in reverse.

Below is a pic of the steering stop on the front axle (passenger side). There's another one on the drivers side.

The pic is a bit small but you may be able to see I've added 3 washers under the nut on the steering stop bolt (red arrow).
3 washers is a lot. Start with one, then try 2 if needed. Less is better.
When removing the bolt, use an open ended wrench on the nut near the red arrow.
DO NOT try to remove by using the bolt head (yellow arrow).

EDIT - the pic is of a RHD so don't be confused by the location of the tie rod.
The steering stops are in the same place LHD or RHD

I have "31 inch" BFG ATs and they don't rub at all on my stock LJ. They are also more like 30.5 inches when hanging in the air or on the spare carrier.

I wouldn't worry at all. Stock Rubi's had 31's and they don't rub. I also used to have 31x10.50 on my jeep and they were far from rubbing.

The rim backspacing is part of the equation. The stock jeep rims do not have the same backspace. It's usually the sidewall that rubs because the 10.5 is a little wider than the stock line of tires and not all tires if the same size have the exact same measurements. It's not the diameter that is the issue

right... i should have also mentioned i have stock wheels and mine are also 31x10.50

idk if there was a difference between stock wheels or not

From your profile it looks like your rims are the ones with 5.5" of backspacing. The rubicon rims came with 5" of backspacing. So there is a half inch discrepancy there, which shouldn't cause too much of a problem. I can't remember right now how much is needed. But I'll look around on the forum to see if I can't figure it out again.

Basically what i've read is that most people say 5" of bs is ideal for 31x10.50's. But you can run them on a wheel with 5.5" bs. However, if you think you'll ever go to bigger tires, I'd just go ahead and spend the extra money for some new wheels with 4-3.75" bs. That way you can run a 12.50 wide tire if you want to in the future. But if you don't want to do that you can always just get spidertrax spacers or adjust the steering stops.

Thanks for that. Just wondering though, it looks like the nut is welded to the bolt on mine. Am I wrong?

So I just picked up a set of 31" tires, running them on a stock setup (for now), but I'm getting some serious rubbing at full turn. I don't really have enough for new wheels, so what would be the best recommendation for spacer size to clear them from rubbing?

You can pick up a BB=budget boost. They are about 50.00 on ebay.

Another cheap fix for them rubbing on your lower control arm, go to a junkyard and get lower front control arms from a 98-04 WJ grand Cherokee. They have a small bend in them that works for clearing bigger tires on TJs.

Yep that's right, the nut is welded on.
And that's the nut you use to tighten/loosen the steering stop - which is a bolt.

I wanna say they quoted me a little over $200 when I got mine, but try and do it yourself, you'll learn a lot about your jeep and its a pretty easy install
