water proof?

Im looking at the XRC 8 winch by smittybuilt and noticed the X20-8 waterproof winch. I was wondering if it was worth the extra $70 for a waterproof solenoid and motor? I dont plan on being in deep water for long periods if at all..but i guess better safe than sorry. And dont bash my choice in winch, for the money i've heard the XRC has proven itself. And i do plan on upgrading to the synthetic rope.

When talking to the shop manager of one of our local offroad stores he said the only xrc-8 he had come back under warranty was due to being submerged for a extended period of time. So if you plan on sinking it then maybe upgrade but they did warranty the non waterproof unit. Since price is the main selling point of the smittybilt, I would personally put the 70 bucks toward the synthetic line and go with the xrc-8. I've had my used one on the front uncovered for over a year and the only complaint is the lever that engages the clutch can freeze up and stick if you don't keep it lubed. Good luck with your purchase.

Looks like I'll just save the money and use it for a synth rope. don't plan on sinking the Jeep.

Fresh water doesn't normally hurt winches or low-voltage (12v) electrical circuits. I wouldn't worry about it, a winch being waterproof just seems like the current fad. Afterall, our starter motors are essentially the same thing as a winch motor and they are as exposed as a winch is and they are wide open to the elements, they are constantly drenched with water whenever it is raining.

Thats very true Jerry, which is why I haven't bothered to seal mine up yet. probably never will. Still saving my nickels for a good winch though, however, this year our money will be spent on yet another expedition, this trip, home hunting in the Carson Valley of Nevada.
