Weird clutch noise

I have a 97 TJ 5 speed manual and the clutch? Is making a weird noise. When its warm, it makes a high pitched scraping metallic sound. Hard acceleration and pressing in the clutch pedal makes it stop. Otherwise it is persistent. Again only after it warms up. Any thoughts?

Just heard that sound a week ago. It may be the throwout bearing, it was toast on my buddy's. It will fail if you don't fix it. Make sure you put in a new pilot bearing and clutch when you have it all apart.

most likely its your pilot bearing...

if you engage the clutch... the throw out bearing is under pressure, when the throw out bearing is bad they usually make a grumbling sound.

with what you are describing its probably your pilot bearing... some people forget about the pilot bearing when they put in a new clutch.

I thought the TOB made a sound when you pressed in the clutch though... Mine goes away when you press it in. I don't know enough about this stuff though, and I really don't want to pay for a whole new clutch assembly... Grrrr.

not necessarily, when was the last time you replaced your clutch?

I've gone back in and replaced just pilot bearings... so long as the clutch was good, and the fly wheel fingers where good..

now days with poop being made in chain some of those bearings in the kits are junk...

The clutch, if it was was replaced, was done before I bought it. Not sure if or when though. The clutch works great, no issues, other than just recently started making the noise. I have 97,xxx miles on the Jeep.

Also, since it only does it when the Jeep is moving, Pilot bearing sound like more likely candidate...?

are you gonna do the work yourself? Then yeah just replace both TOB and PB.. but my money is on the pilot bearing.. it'll suck to drop the tranny and only replace the PB only for a couple months to go by and then the TOB goes too... that's usually the nature of things.

here's another thing to consider.... this just happened to me a couple months ago....

a buddy brought his jeep over and said hey its making this high pitched squeal when I'm moving down the road at speed... and also when I'm sitting still...

so I said no problem most likely your pilot bearing ... so we dropped the tranny and replaced his PB, and the noise stopped while he was sitting but was still there when he was driving..

So then I thought ah man should've replaced the TOB... but I looked a the drive-line real good and noticed the centering yoke was not greased and it cooked itself...

Double Cardan CV centering yoke fits Jeep 1310 series CV driveshaft Spicer style constant velocity driveshaft centering yoke amd replacement spring

and then 3 months later his TOB went...

but it was good practice on dropping the support plate and tranny....

pilot bearing $10
release bearing $50

whole kit $160

I don't have time to do the work. The Jeep is for sale, and I have a guy driving down to look at it tonight. It just started doing this. Figures right? I will tell him about it, and drop the price some and see if he is still interested.
