Well, the dealer took me for a ride.

When I purchased my Jeep last winter, the dealer told me I had the remainder of the 8/80,000 warranty. At 20,000, the rear seal went and then again at 24,000, all covered. Now at 43,000, it was making ticking noises from up front, so I called the dealer, they told me to drop it off to fix. I asked about the warranty and they said its covered to 80,000. Now today, they called me, said the belt and tensioner is bad and its going to run me $325. I asked about the "warranty" and they said I only had the 3/36,000 coverage. WTF? I bought it used with 17,000, why would I not want the extended warranty (which Jeep offered when it was purchased new)? Why did it change and why did the tensioner go bad at 43,000 miles? I drive a ford truck to work everyday with 196,000 miles and it has the original tensioner on it. does that seem like a short time? I think Im being screwed somehow, or they just dont want to say my lift voided it or something. weird

The extended warranty is only tranferable to the second owner if you contact the dealer and pay a fee to transfer it. the 3yr/36000 automatically transfers without any notice to the dealer or fee. It blows I know. That's what happened to me.

oh, I see. when I bought it, I thought they wanted me to purchase the bumper to bumper warranty. I thought I had the 80,000. damn. time to trade it in. Im sure this hunk will have more problems down the road that I cant be affording with no warranty. Looks like I shouldnt have gotten rid of all my stock parts.

When he told you 80,000 miles, he was probably thinking of the EMISSIONS warranty. A tensioner isn't related to emissions.

Call a regular parts house - I think a tensioner should be $50 or less.
Most any shop can put it on in a few minutes.

Why it went out at fairly low mileage? Who knows, sometimes they do that. You wouldn't have won in Vegas that day either.

I hope it came with a new belt - when the tensioner goes, it usually hurts the belt.

I wouldn't be worried about your Jeep just because the warranty has run out. My TJ's 36,000 mile warranty ran out 139,000 miles ago and my engine, tranny, t-case have all been just fine. $325 is nothing, long-term.

I talked to the service department today and they worked out a deal for me.They knocked off some coins for the tensioner and belt, then called me back to tell me my power steering pump was shot. That was going to be another $535 which I dont have right now, (damm school taxes), so the manager got it covered and only charged me a $50 deductible to replace it. I guess being nice to them instead of my usual swearing and name calling works. So I'll have the Jeep back sometime Friday unless something else should pop up.

it always pays to treat people nicer, than screaming. i was a little worried for a second that you were gonna trade your jeep in cuz of a tensioner and belt.

i would try talking to them about purchasing an aftermarket warranty. gotta look over the contract real well though, but its probably worth buying since you don't sound like the big wrenching type.

gotta make sure its a good one though, there's some hokey warranties out there. they'll pay $50/hr and only autozone parts and crap like that.

Forget warranties.

My buddy bought a 6 year 100k warranty for 1k.

His car now has 95k 5 years later and he took it in for electrical. It was all free but the electrical would've only cost him $435.

O well.

I just had the power steering pump replaced at the dealership (right next to the Hosp I work for). The price seemed high to me but convenience and timing were my main problem. I paid $240. I brought it in and told them the prob I was having, went to work, got a call in 1 hr saying the pump was going bad, and had it repaired in 2 hrs. For a change I feel good about the experience.

I had no symptoms of the pump going bad. Never was low, no noise. When I took left hand turns, I did feel this weird clunking. Then it started on sharp right hand turns. No idea if its related though.

Mine was a bearing going bad. Had a whine that was almost unnoticable (my wife said only I could hear it!) It made noise with acceleration so I knew where it was coming from, just more than I was willing to attempt at home. Plus it was easier to drop it off while I was working a day shift (I usually work nights).
