What can I do with 3.07 gears?

Besides replace them.
From what I have been reading they are not great.
We have a 2002 TJ X 4.0 32RH transmission.
We will be needing tires next. IT has 38k original miles therefore the original Goodyear Wrangler tires 225/75R15
I'm not looking to do a lift or a much larger tire, but how big can I safely go?
Jeep is a daily driver, will see some off road to get me fishing with an occasional joy ride through some tame trails.
Thanks, Pete

With that gearing I would say go no bigger than a 31" tire (with a 2" suspension lift) and I would that's even stretching it. Probably be best with 29"-30" tire, otherwise you should probably regear to 3.73. Or just stick with stock size tires:)

I have 3.07 gears and 31's and it's miserable. Going up a hill on a 55mph highway I'm either screaming in 3rd gear, bogging down in 4th, and won't even try 5th. I can't pull a trailer very well either. Whoever decided that jeeps should get 3.07's needs get his butt kicked.

I tell ya, I have 3.07 in a 97 Sport with the 32RH 3 speed auto, 31" tires and 99K miles. Although I can't out run a GT Mustang, my old TJ doesn't do all that bad. Much better than my old 02 4 cyl. TJ did.

I drive it on the highway on the way to work, up to and sometimes past 70 MPH, and have no problem getting up to speed from the onramp.

I have taken it wheeling 2 times this year and had no problem keeping up with everyone.

Now, understand, I do not have aftermarket heavy bumpers on the front and back or much anything extra on it, and I have not attempted to climb a crazy hill yet.

I do plan on re-gearing before I get my lift and 33"s or 35's on. I might even get a D44 or Ford 8.8 instead of just re-gearing. I will also ad lockers.

But to answer your question, the 3.07 with 31" tires, (not mud but A/t) and the 32RH is a good daily driver. Better on fuel economy too.

I have an 03 6cyl 5spd with 31 10.50. And 307. No lift. It's just terrible on the highway! And cruise cont? Lol that's a joke. All cruise is is a button that makes your gas pedal scrape the road. I've found if I want to brake the law. At 80 mph she rides very well in 5th.. 55 to 65 is... well better be flat. NOT raining and no wind. With my set up 5th at 65 is like 1700rpm. Maybe a touch less.. my saturn vue redline can do this no problem.. but the smaller. lighter. Smarter. More economical friendly. More mpg and power! Honda 3.5 is unmatched... but I would still choose the jeep any day... not a tree hugger!

I have a 3.07 gears on 4.25 lift and 33-12.5-15 on 15x10 rims and I haven't used 5th gear since I put it on and I'm fine with the set up but I drive on high ways maybe once a month and I can go 60-65 on 4th gear resting at 2rpm, I drive mostly through town and my rpm goes up to 2.5 going up a hill although I'm quick on the clutch I can climb at 3rd gear easily you just have to be smart and get some momentum. Oh and my new mbrp exhaust helped a lot with getting my rpm up faster to get moving

I have a dana35/30 with 3.73 sitting in my garage if you are interested. I'm sure we can work out a price that would be much cheaper then re-gearing. I know pulling a 35 for a 35 really isn't the ideal situation but hey the 3.73 might be worth it.

Somebody please school me on stock gearing. I have 30s with 3.73 gears and 4.0L. From what I have read, it seems like it's the best for highway and city driving but not great for towing?
What is the ideal factory gear ratio? What ones were offered besides 3.07 and 3.73

What gear ratio is faster from 0-60mph?

depends where you drive and what your perspective is.

What is the ideal factory gear ratio?
again, depends on your perspective, and what engine/trans/tire combination you're running.

What ones were offered besides 3.07 and 3.73
3.55 in some 97 models only.
4.10 in all rubicons.
Some 4-cyl's also got 4.10s or 4.56s depending on year and transmission combination.

What gear ratio is faster from 0-60mph?
the deeper you go, the faster from 0-60mph. For example, 4.88s are deeper (also called "lower", or "numerically higher") than 3.07s. 3.07s are taller (also called "higher" or "numerically lower" than 4.88s.

when my trash was stock I hated to drive back home in the mountains with the 3.07s and in fact here at home where it is mostly flat, I dreaded trying to go anywhere that I'd be in a hurry to get to. I was going to re gear to 3.55 just till I made up my mind what size lift and tire combo I wanted to go with. but I got lucky on a few build options and it all worked out.

In short the 3.07 was not a good combo with even the skinny minnies... I don't see how anyone is running them on anything bigger....

With the 225's around town and even highway hasn't been an issue. Gets up to speed and maintains it. It'll do 80 no problem. Scariest part of driving a Wrangler fast is a cross breeze. Automatic lane change.
I'll opt for a like size tire that is a bit beefier than the Goodyears that are on it.
Heck it's just fun to drive.

I do not have the issues everyone is describing here. I have a 2002 4.0 32RH and four years ago went to a
3 1/2" lift with 33 X 12.50 all terrain tires on 15" rims.
I have zero performance issues. The jeep runs straight and true, and can run 80 mph plus on the interstate.
On secondary roads it performs well too. Plus I live in Kentucky where the roads are built straight up and down steep hills . I honestly can tell little difference from stock. The 32RH shifts smooth and the 4.0 delivers the torque and power effortlessly,.
I have a farm and it does well navigating the hills and hollers. It does well at off road parks but I admit I do not go on the extreme trails nor do I rock crawl.
Maybe I am lucky but the Dana 30 front and Dana 35 stock axles have stood up to every challenge I have presented the jeep with.
I am the second owner and the jeep was all stock when I purchased it. No one had re-geared it.
I wonder if any other jeepers out there with 3.07 gears with 33's have had the same experience as i have had.
It had 49,000 miles on it when I bought it. I did the mods at 75,000. It now has 100,000 and runs fantastic.
I love it.
