I'm new to my wrangler (only had it about a month) and I have checked it out pretty good. Pulled the build sheet for it and found out it has 4:11 gears. I'm running 31.7" Kenda Klever tires. I know the 4:11 is for the number of rotations, but what I want to know is what that means? Is it geared for climbing mountains or rocks or trails or what? Like I said, I'm new to my jeep and if like to know what it was built to do, before I try it. Lol
I'm going to take a guess and say the you have a 4 cyl manual. These gears come standard in the setup so no your gear ratio was intended for the road but still works fine off road
yep, deeper gears to make up for the less powerful 4 banger. if you want to go with taller tires, you'll need to go with deeper gears or performance will be even worse
Thanks! Ok... So say I want to eventually add a 2" lift... And maybe move up to 33's.... Then I'm going to have to change gears? What kind of gear ratio will I be looking at? Is this even something that should be done with the 4 banger? Or is what I've got right now pretty much the limit on my 4 banger? Also... Yes, it is a manual
I don't want performance to suffer terribly, as it is already kind of lacking with the tires I have... But I don't want to put more strain on my engine than it can handle by lifting and going to larger tires either.... I would still like for it to perform off road as well as be able to keep up with traffic on the interstate, without getting 6 mpg. Lol. (I know, I shoulda bought the I6, but it wasn't an option for me at the time)
The good news is you can easily sell your axles for at least 300 each and pick up some cheap 3.07 ones for the shop to do the gear swap. Stock 4.10 are In High demand because it saves people like me with 3.07 and 33's 4.0 6l from paying for a gear swap.
I'm in the same boat as you OP. I've done a lot of research and 33's with 4.11 gears are not recommended but tolerable. However I'm sure your performance will suffer on the highway. The gears you will want for 33's are 4.88's I'm pretty sure. I was also planning on doing 33's with 4.11's but had some complications that is preventing me from doing 33's for a couple years. Also if you're doing a lift for 33's a 4" lift would be better than a 2". The zone 4.25" combo is highly recommended and was what I was going to do. It's a little more money than a 2" lift but not too much. it will give your 33's much better suspension travel for off-road which sounds like that is somewhat important to you.
Thanks!! This will give me something to think about for a little while and check into. A good starting point for me to check out, until I can save the money to do it!
