What do you guys think of used jeep parts?

Looking at buying a jeep, and a friend of mine told me about a TJ that aesthetically was in good condition, but was having some Tranny problems (jeep wants to pull forward in reverse), and had around 180,000 on the engine. It's an auto 4.0l and only had one owner, but I guess the question is are these kind of parts worth buying? I actually have a jeep parts salvage yard pretty close to me. Realistically it's going to at least need a new transmission, along with at some point a new engine. Would kind of be interested if any of you guys have used the parts, or think it's even worth getting into something that you know has problems in the first place.

All depends on price.. You can get a used transmission for $300.. Slap it in yourself and you have a working vehicle.. But if they are asking peak condition for the jeep it won't be worth it..

Depends on a few things

1. Your mechanical abilities
2. The try overall condition of the jeep (minus transmission issues)
3. THE PRICE!!!
4. Your funds available after the purchase of the Jeep.

If you have a Jeep salvage yard close to where you live then you are in a whole lot better place than most of us. Most of us would kill to have one of those near us. Lol

I've pieced a lot of my Jeep build together from fabricated components, forum deals, junkyard parts and craigslist finds.....

Pretty sure it's around 2500. It was his mom's and she supposedly drove like a granny, so I guess shouldn't have to worry too much about abuse to the thing, unless of course she never maintained the thing. As for mechanical skills, not the greatest, but I do have a cousin who restores hotrods for a living who might be about to help out.

I live up in the North East, so not sure price wise if these are even decent.

jeep motors

I know a friend of mine just bought a TJ from a guy who had a rebuilt motor put in. He said where he was, a salvage yard motor was running around 1300, whereas here they're around 550. So not really sure. Was maybe going to take a run down there today, and see what kind of condition it's in. Might be something to look at.

I would be less concerned with the engine right now. These Jeep engines are near bulletproof when maintained. Given that you live in the northeast I would really check that thing good for rust. Especially on the frame.

Which is actually what my cousin just told me when I called him. I've heard it from a few others, but his comment was the inline 6's last forever. He said for sure the tranny needs replaced, and then rust being the other potential problem. It's about an hour away, and called him up, so sometime this evening going to make a run down and see what's going on with it.
