Question What gears to get?

I have a 2.5L 3-speed Auto Wrangler TJ, with the stock 4.11 gears(I think). I have a 4 in lift and 33 m/t. Soon I plan on re-gearing, and possibly adding a rear locker. I have some questions about all of this.

First off, my top speed is currently 65-70 mph.
1. How will that change with the gears you suggest?
2. How hard is it to re-gear an axle yourself?
3. Will it be worth the $?
4. What type and brand locker do you recommend for someone on a budget?
5. Any links to a site with the gears and or locker for sale?
6. Any other tips?

Please answer whatever you can. Thanks

4.88 because you can't fit 5.13's in the D30. But it would be wise to upgrade your rear axle if you plan on putting a locker in it.

1. How will that change with the gears you suggest? Not sure
2. How hard is it to re-gear an axle yourself? Can be done, but worth paying for
3. Will it be worth the $?
4. What type and brand locker do you recommend for someone on a budget? lock right, but upgrade your axle 1st, or a super 35 kit
5. Any links to a site with the gears and or locker for sale? all kinds of sites have them, try joe at absoluteoffroadphx.com

Call Absolute Offroad and see what the prices are for 03 - 06 rubicon d44 axles. You can get them configured just about anyway you like... from stock 4.11 gears and 30 spline stock shafts to chromo front with yukon super joints and 35 spline chromo rear with 5.89's and ARB lockers

you could get one axle at a time if you can't afford it all at once or even short term finance it and get it all (is a popular option that his shop offers for guys who are upgrading gears and axles)... just don't go 4wheeling till you get both.

wont 5.13s fit in the standard rotation D30. i know the high pinion is limited to 4.88 but i was thinking the new jeeps were the low pinion variation.....

Nope - old style D30's in Yj/Tj or even the HP D30 in XJ's are limited to 4.88's. The new D30's in the JK though are completly different and are reverse rotation and can accept 5.13 gears.

I'm going to a local 4x4 shop this weekend where i get a 15% discount( Thank you Grandpa), and I'll ask about a D44 while i'm there. If its too expensive, I'll just go 4.88 in the D30, and ask for advice on getting a locker or not. Thanks for the info guys

get an aussie locker in the front, it will handle better than a rear locker, and it is a stronger axle!

I wouldn't say that the front axle is stronger than a D35 or D44, but it doesn't see the continual load that the rear axle does. It still has 27 spline shafts, but usually when you break a front axle it's because you got bound up on something and it just gave way. Or the ears on the stock shafts oblong a little and you throw a cap or something.

The rear axle takes the vast majority of the beating.
