What happened in 1996

So, I've always looked and it always seems that the wrangler skipped the 1996 model year? WHY? I'm sure I could google and find the answer, but it's much more fun to ask the board. Thanks

And the 1995 YJ's were still made half way into 1996, so its a Model lap over year

Chrysler bought AMC and didn't produce a 96 wrangler, but retooled and came up with the 97 with round headlights, etc. There may have been 95 wranglers or 97 wranglers built in 96 (don't know) but no 96 model.

Chrysler has owned AMC since 1987. The 1996 model was just the factory transition from the YJ to the TJ so models overlap.

That $250 million figure is usually the quoted cost of developing the Cherokee and Wagoneer. I don't know about the TJ.

It's a gap year in model designation only.. the YJ and TJ were both part of 1996, but no Wrangler was given that model.

In Early 1996 there was a worldwide shortage of Awesomeness. so the TJ had to wait a few months before it was released. Jeep decided that since it was already over 1/2 way through the year when their awesomeness reserves were at a level great enough to make a TJ that they'd just call it a 1997 model.

This is 100% true.

This is 100% true.
is it also true that a young Barney Stinson helped design the awesomeness of the TJ?

My family bought our 2nd Ford Explorer

Also Tupac Shakur was gunned down in 1996 and Chrysler just wanted to pay their respects to their dead homies by releasing nothing else that could compare to the greatness that year.

I was told that he had a part. But Chuck Norris came in mid way through the design. Barney was so distraught by this new character coming in he left. Chuck Norris' part on the design is still unknown, but its been rumored that when you place a TJ too close to a car that insults the TJ a fist will come out of the TJ and destroy the other vehicle in one hardcore knockout punch.
