That's one of those "frameless" tops? I may be the only one, but I like the look of the origional better. The black looks good......wish I woulda went with black, in stead of spice.

it took a while for it to grow on me, but now i 100% like the look of a frameless top better. the "fastback" look is just a little nicer than the "brick" look.

but yeah. i have a spice one too. spice looks good on a green sahara or a red tj...thats about it. mine is black - i do not like tan on black. bleh.

nope. its a softopper. when it comes to a frameless top, softopper is the best way to go. its such a better deal (comes with EVERYTHING - including header bar and tailgate bar and special door surrounds) than the rest, and is way better quality and way more functional. look em up. softopper.com

ill go ahead and say that bestop makes killer tops and i run one right now and love it for ease of function. (but its the wrong color, and i dont like the classic square-box look anymore. )
BUT - the bestop framelss top is a complete hassel. its good if you plan on leaving it on for a long time and are happy with just putting back the sunrider part. but if you are like me and have your top on and off all of the time (i run a spiderwebshade under my top) then the bestop frameless is not for you.

Cool...I'll definitely look them up...I run a regular Bestop convertible soft top, but it's pretty old and gettin faded (plus the bikini top on occasion)...I'll probably even pull the trigger on the Smitty CRES top, just cause it's a fastback style and the cargo net looks all Mad-Max cool...but your black fastback is tight! Love that look more than the square-style original tops.

did it "need" replacing or did you do this as a preventative measure?

I recently suffered the death of a dear, old friend who passed on at the tragically young age of 10. My 2003 TJ SE decided it was time to throw a rod clean through the 2.4L block.

I replaced it with a 2003 Sport that looks nearly identical so that I can cannibalize freely.

Yesterday I had new plugs, four O2 sensors and the air filter changed. I also had four new BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA/KOs mounted on the Mickey Thompson Classic Locks.

My mileage improved from 13.9 to 17.25 on the highway. And the conestoga wagon ride is now smooth and quiet.

Pretty darn great day, if you ask me...

I checked the original last week, and it showed some wear. But, it has 75,000 miles on it. After reading about OPDA issues, I decided to install a Dorman.
It may have never had a problem. But, many folks have had issues with more miles than I have. Insurance and peace of mind, I suppose.
Here is a (blurry) picture of the original unit.

I must put in a word for Bestop regarding the frameless. i purchased my trektop NX in May of 2011, about 2 weeks ago i was poking around on here and found that they have upgraded the door surrounds and pin that holds the sunroof frame. i called and talked to a rep named Jimmy and he stated that he and Bestop wanted to take care of this and would send me new surrounds and all the other parts to "correct" the issue. i then asked if Bestop offered a replacement rear window because the last time i put the back window in and a tooth broke. Jimmy said that he would include a new rear window and asked if there was anything else he could help me with.
And this is with a top that is over 2 years old.

the other frameless tops may be cheaper but just as Jimmy's email stated
"IT'S ABOUT THE SERVICE" i would strongly suggest going with Bestop when you are able to get you new top.
