Well said.

Maybe it's all in my head, but I think a lot of dogs that are adopted from the pound or shelter also have some understanding that they were "saved" by their new owner and appreciate it, too.

When I lived in Iowa we went with a Corn Dog. They arn't messy, always have a coat on in cold weather and their bite is as good as their bark.

I'm kinda in the new dog mode now too. My last dog, a huge golden retriever, died several years ago so it's finally time again.

The suggestions to go with a pound animal is my thought too, I hate to think of what happens to them when no one adopts them. A mix sounds good too, something with retriever/setter/springer spaniel/etc. blood would be nice. I've had mostly purebread dogs in the past and it seems like many have been inbred so much that they have more health problems than mixes or mutts do.

I miss not having a dog, I LOVE dogs!

Here are my Jeep dogs. The white on is a shelter rescue, terrier mix, and the Aussie was given to me by a friend. Both great dogs, but the Aussie is better off road than the terrier.

I have a black lab. She was a pound puppy that joined the police dept. I worked for. She eventually became my drug dog (and a good one she was!). I bought her for $1 when I saw the writting on the wall! She loves to ride in the Jeep, but will only get in one of the front doors! She refuses to get in the back! She'll get up front, the go to the back, and get out the back!

I would say either a lab or a pound puppy. I have had both over the years and they have been the best dogs.

I picked up a dog at the pound that had been living at the local pick and pull. she came with grease stains so she matched the jeep. and nothing says stay away like a pit bull from the junk yard.

Some kind of border collie or blue heeler mix. Top notch intelligence(wont jump out) and territorial(bite the hands off of would be thieves).

I have a border collie blue heeler....best dog I have ever owned. Wicked high energy....so takes alot of playing but he love to catch Frisbee's so its fun for me too.

Forgot to say "shelter dog" along with everyone else.

My boxer loves the jeep. She just hangs out and enjoys the air. My pound puppy doesnt mind the jeep either, but rather crowd the center console and hang out with me instead of enjoying the breeze with having the top down

I've got a Beagle that I picked up from the shelter that loves to ride in the back seat with her head over the side, ears flappin in the wind. If I try to sing with my music she even howls like crazy right along with me! Def an attention grabber...

Don't have a dog right now so Im just givin a opinion but I would think the perfect JeeP dog would be a English Wolfhound. Just train it to hook up your winch cable to a tree or whatever. The long legs would keep it from drowin in deep mud holes and if the winch gave out...it could probably pull you out of trouble.....besides.........awesome theft deterant

Here's my Jeep dog, and she is the BEST Jeep dog in the world, she's a Labradoodle so she doesn't get hair everywhere, just sand haha. She used to wind surf in the convertible mustang but now she has the Jeep. She goes everywhere with me and she loves the space, the beach driving and hanging, the wind and trails and everything it has to offer!

Fletch came from the pound. He's 50 lbs of JEEP dog. He fits anywhere and it turns out he's an excellent driver.

Highly rec'd for any Jeep dog!

Raingler Nets
All Things Jeep - Raingler Nets 3 piece System for Jeep Wrangler 97-06 (Rear Window & Side Nets)

IMO - you want a dog big enough to get in and out without issue. But having a 'doge' will also change how you mod a little. We're not removing our side steps for instance nor getting any insane lifts as we want our 6 year old Lab/Husky to able to get in and out okay for the coming years. I love the look of the tubular side steps for instance, but one bad mis-step and yer running to the vet emergency room.

After being around Jeff & Stephanie's (Mr & Mrs. Turdhurdler) Australian Shepherd this past weekend while wheeling, I fell in love with it. Their dog was absolutely great. He hung around the campsite and didn't run off, didn't bark, was calm, and was a great dog to be around. That kind of dog is now #1 on my list once I get the wife's approval.

Old English Sheepdog

or as everyone calls him shaggy dog, or the little mermaid dog, or snow bear

He loves to go for a ride. Mention the word and he's at the door ready to go, then when he gets in the car he's not getting out until I at least go for a spin around the block.

boxers!! well cept they wanna take over your jeep and drive it on date nights! Roxie AKA Rox is on the left and Zeus is driving. Both are rescues. Roxie likes to chase and kill beavers. Zeus was on verge of death when I found him on side of road. Roxie is good in jeep with top on or off. Zeus only comes with top on though. He jumped out of g/f's Eclipse at 55mph on way to lake one day upon hearing another dog bark. NO REAL INJURIES. minor scrapes to "knees". An hour later he was running around drink'n beer on the pontoon!

I've been thinking about investing in one of the cargo nets so i can ride with the top off and take zeus with me. How do you guys with the net like them? they look decently priced. figure they are worth the money, especially if i can have both dumb and dumber with me and be worry free.

I agree with jskinn, get whatever dog you want, you'll get attached to it no matter what. And how they act is 100% on how you train them, real dog owners know this.
