What is this and should it have play?

Trying to find the source of a vibration in first gear when starting. Both sides of this bushing have some play.

Also, should these bolts look like this? They are on the skid plate but are not cinched up.

Those loose nuts under the tcase skid could be causing that vibration. They hold the tranny/xfer case to the skid and it could be moving a little bit under the engine torque. Tighten them up and see if that does anything.

The first photo is the sway bar link and it should not have play in it.

Here is where the transfer case mounts to the frame. Does not look like any drop does it?

I think my mechanic loosened the wrong bolts thinking he was dropping the transfer case!

So I tightened the four bolts. The vibe i seemed to be getting which was sort of a shutter is now gone. BUT now the stick shift shutters like crazy on launch. WTF? Feels like the entire transmission is vibrating.

Fixed one problem and created another.

I loosened the four bolts back out a bit. Not as far as before. The stick shift is no longer vibrating like crazy but the other problem is back.

I just spoke to my mechanic. I think what he did is lowered the transmission without lowering the skid plate by replacing a block that supports the transmission with a smaller one.

The four transmission bolts were not loosened, they dropped through the skid plate because the transmission was lowered.

Regardless, the transmission is vibrating and when the nuts are loosened it wiggles a bit and I can feel it. When the nuts are tight, it wants to wiggle but can't so the energy is transfered to the stick.

He is stopping over tomorrow.
