What is this? (Magnet to start?)

What is this? Besides annoying? Just bought the Jeep today. Sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds to make the light stop flashing.

I can only assume that is some kind of a magnetic switch that is a timed on activation. Please keep us up on what it is and how it works.

Whatever it is, it's not something the factory installed.

Jeep have an Alarm system. Looks like a magnetic kill switch key. Key in socket car runs. Key in pocket car dies. Will the Jeep run without it.

Jeep will not start without holding the magnet to the other magnet first.

I'd try another magnet, and see if that's a weak spot in your alarm/anti-theft system.

I'd like to get rid of it all together. It bugs the crap out of me lol.

I will give another magnet a try also.

I've tried Googling to find such a thing with no luck. I've read where people had one installed behind the dash and you had to hold a magnet over it to start the vehicle. They make a magnetic trigger lock for handguns that use a ring to deactivate it. I thought a combination of the two would make a neat kill switch.

It's sounds/looks like some sort of homemade anit-theft device. My friend had his truck stolen and they peeled the steering column. After he managed to get it back he had something similar installed only it used a what looks like a flatened Ruffles potato chip that has to be inserted for X amount of time before you are able to start it. I think it was from Viper but i could be mistaken, it was a few years ago.

Follow the wires that come from it and remove. Restore any cuts made in the OEM wiring and throw that thing as far as you can. It's an anti theft device, we call them immobilizers.

Didn't your Jeep come with a chip in the key? (mine has that)

Not to my knowledge. It's a 2000... Don't know when the chips came into play. I'll dig into the dash and see what I can do as far as the wires go.
