I dont bother calculating. I only drive it for pleasure purposes as i have a company vehicle for work. I have no idea if my speedo is right, therefore no idea if my odometer is right. Every pump is a little different when it shuts off, so I also dont know exactly how much fuel was used either. To many little variables that add up to big unknowns. I just put the gas in when it tells me to and enjoy the miles in between, however many that may be.

I've found a place with 0 ethanol gas. It seems to last a lot longer and gives the jeep a bit more power on the highway grades. Will have to do a real numbers comparison one of these days.

One of the downsides is that the station that has the 0 ethanol is charging for 88 grade at about a buck more than other places are charging for ethanol blend 94 grade. Can you say gouging?

Spark Plugs!

I did an economy study, so here's the results:

My Jeep is a 92' Islander:
- 177K miles (original/ old/ tired)
- 4.0 w/ 5sp mnl
- 3.07 gears
- 32" BFG MTs w/ 17" steel wheels
- Bone Stock, no (other) add-ons
- No hard top, safari top only
- Driving Style- not granny but not Steve McQueen either, i'd say middle of the road
- 80% Highway Miles
- 20% City Miles
- 0% Offroad (too many variables for a good comparison)
- Odometer off by 11% due to new tires, (yes this was factored into the calculations)
- Previous MPG: 11-13 (AVG, 5 tanks)
- New MPG: 18.1 (first tank)

Sooo, what did i do???

After failing smog with high HCs, I realized that I had an ignition issue (unburned gas). The plugs were top of the line Bosch split-fire platinum at $7 a pop and everything had recently been changed by the P/O.
On the advice from a Jeep buddy, I did another tune up:

- Ditched EVERYTHING I COULD
- New Champion plugs (absolute cheapest ones they had, resistor of course)
- New cheap plug wires (Duralast)
- New Cap/ Rotor (cheap/ Duralast again)
- Plug gap= 0.032"
- Used the stock wire guides to organize the plug wires and avoid rubbing/ burning
- Dielectric grease on the inner boot surfaces (both sides) so they can be pulled off later as needed.

VERDICT: ~50% Increase in economy, significant increase of power, all for a $95 tune-up.
Total Payback: at $3.50/ gal, this tune up will pay for itself after the next 5 tanks of gas, saving an average of $18 a tank.

BOTTOM LINE: JEEPS LOVE CHAMPION PLUGS!
Why: They fire most effectively around 20KV, which is about what the stock coil puts out. Those Bosch's hit max fire at closer to 80KV, so at 20KV, they're pitiful.

Hope this bit of Jeep101 was helpful.

Keep Calm and JEEP ON!

what?

all tjs are 19 to my knowledge. .

anyway the size of the tank has nothing to do with your MPG.. it the ammont of miles driven since last fill up and the amount of gallons it took to fill back up.. if your running it all the way to red you are killing your jeep... fill it up as often as possible.. and ovied below 1/2 like the plage.. especially when it gets really warm..

The tank size is the same, but some models had a limit in the filler neck that cuts it off at 15. The "19 gallon" tank was an "optional upgrade".

I average 11.5mpg but have gotten as low as 10.4 and as high as 12.7
I use the Fuelly app to track my mileage.

I'm on 33s and you don't want my MPG. I'll probably be a disgrace here in the next 5 years when I downsize to 32s to help out those numbers

Don't have to regear, still plenty capable, can get rid of my T-case drop, and just less rubber in general that my 4.0 has to push.

33s, 6 speed, and 4.10 gears and average 10.5 mpg as my dd. Sucks if you ask me, but I didn't buy a Jeep for fuel economy. However, if I can find the cheaper route to restore my powerband and bump those numbers up a bit, that's all I need
