What model is the 2003 Freedom Edition Based On?

What model is the 2003 Freedom Edition Based On? ...and can anyone list the differences?

It's an X model basically.

I have a freedom edition and not sure what its based off of but I can tell you the options. Has the 4.0 - 5 speed, D30/35, softop, full doors, fog lights, painted fender flares to match the body and a cool sticker on the side that says freedom! Oh and the amazing 3.07 gears.

The freedom edition, apex edition and tomb raider edition are all X models with different stickers and different chrome trim. And the X is basically an SE "base model" with the 4.0L

I guess I misread. Just looked it up. Yup it is a Rubicon. Just with ugly pocket flares.

Hi 03Ruth, ...Thanks for the response! ...I don't know too much about the tech aspects of my JWFE.... in fact, that's why I'm here... what's the D30/35 all about, and also the "amazing 3.07 gears"... is any of that good, better than, or bad? ...are they upgrades over something else...

I was thinking for a while there, that the only difference was just the "cool stickers"...

The d35 is the weaker of the two rear axles offered, the d44 is the desirable one, the d30 is standard to all except the rubicon models which have a f/r D44 and lockers. The 307 gears are also the lowest numerical gears offered, which make the TJ a dog with anything bigger than stock size tires.

...and don't forget the Freedom TJ came with unique 15" chrome wheels, and you could only get this special edition in Red. Blue, Silver or Black and were made with only the Dark Slate Grey interior color (cloth or vinyl).

theres a black Freedom TJ for sale over here in Ellington CT at Lee's Auto Ranch but it is beat up pretty badly.

Hi JVLemur, Thanks for the education. On top of not knowing much about the Jeep Wrangler in General... I'm also learning more about manual transmissions and related. Recent spine surgery, and now rehab, allow me the time to educate myself about the vehicle...

I've always felt that my JW can't hardly get out of it's own way... It came with P225/75R15... which seem to me, somewhat Large in size, I'm not sure what the standard size is. I moved from Florida to Upstate, NY about 3 1/2 years ago... pulled a BIG Uhaul... oh boy! ...was that ever an adventure... quite a few times I thought that trailer was going to drag me back down some of them hills I was climbing. On the other hand, it seems it will pull or push, as necessary, no matter what, and never leave one "stuck" in snow or mud.

They sure are Tough!!! 10 Years/150K miles, and honestly, Very Little maintenance, oil changes, a TPS, Oil Pres. Sensor, Battery... Rear Brakes... and just now had the clutch replaced. I've a few other issues that I'm working on (ever annoying EVAP issues, now looking for the Golden Gas Cap for starters)... the rear windshield wiper intermittent op... got a warped rotor, needs shocks (could use a recommendation)... but ALL little stuff, really... maybe some of the joints might have a little arthritis but... oh, and a "ticking" when driving... otherwise, considering, their reputation for "Tough" is well deserved.

What does "f/r" D44 and lockers" mean?

Hi MarkGLHS, I've got the chrome wheels... just had the vehicle detailed, and I thought those rims would never clean or shine up very well, but the detail tech did a tremendous job and for once they're sparkling. I've got the Silver model... my sweetheart thinks I should paint the fenders black... I tend to want to leave it all original, and should I ever sell it, leave the customization up to the next owner. I wish mine was any other color but Silver.

...just as a footnote, my brother had one of the newer Jeep models, maybe a 2010 or so... he traded it in for some little pickup thing, a nice one with a back seat and all that... He didn't have to pay a dime, and in fact, he drove out of the dealership, with his new truck and cash... these Jeeps really hold their value.

Not that I need to, but I wouldn't mind buying a beat up Jeep for the right price. I have a lot of experience tearing up old cars of other breeds... and it seems like there's lots of room to work in, on, and around these Jeeps, and that parts and such are plentiful... if I didn't need it as a daily driver, I believe it would be a Fun project...

Ah ok since yours is an 03 and the 4l I believe you have the nv3550, it's a decent tranny and pretty tough, although a few have said that it gets tough to get it into 1st/reverse on cold days and I'm part of those guys, overall love it until I can afford a swap to an auto.

The 225/75 is about a 28" tire which is about the size that the stocks came in, I think stock is 215/75?(someone correct me if I'm wrong) did you haul the trailer behind the jeep? The wranglers have a max towing of 2k lbs due to the short wheel base, and with 307 gears you are not equipped to haul much as you don't have the towing package(unless you do) which is the 373 gears and up, might have been the reason as to why it was an adventure hauling a trailer.

They sure are tough, take care of it, it'll take care of you(except with mpgs lol). For shocks, are you wanting to go cheap and a bit harsh ride or maybe spend some cash and have a more "comfortable" ride? Since I read you had spine surgery we'll go with the latter, so the top performers are either OME(old man emu) and rancho 9000s(note that they are 9000 not the 5000 they also sell, as the 5000 are a bit rough) those two are praised basically by everyone that's used them as being the most comfortable ride.

F/r I was referring to the Front Dana44 and the Rear dana44 axles offered in the rubicon edition wranglers. They are a lot stronger than the normal combination of D30/D35 offered in sport edition wranglers. And as for lockers, that's another option the rubicon models came with, and are an aftermarket upgrade for the axles to lock the wheels together in situations where there is very little traction. There's a whole lot more on the subject.

Thanks Again TVLemur, ...that fills in some gaps... and I do have the towing package, but that trailer was huge, and I'm sure we were over the specs... but we made it, without any major complications.

The MpG's are pathetic... maybe after I get the EVAP issues corrected, I'll be able to pinch a little more out of her... but I'm not expecting much. and I wish now it were an automatic, my girl is very short and she has a bad knee, so it's difficult, sometimes painful, for her to drive. Those Rancho's sound nice, but jeeze!!!$$$... I'll have to save up... it would be nice to have a softer ride.
