What pieces do I need for soft top?

I just purchased a 2004 tj and the previous owner had it completly gutted. No evidence of there ever being a soft top other then holes where hardware used to be.

Question is, what's my best option here? Quality is not as important seeing as how I'm on a budget. It's going to start raining soon and is definitely getting colder. Many thanks!

So, you want to get a soft top, but you're not sure what hardware you need? Or do you already have a soft top, but unsure of whether you can mount it or not?

If you're looking to find a whole soft top on a budget, search craigslist for a local used soft top. They're easy to come across on there. That's the cheapest way to go. If you want to check out some options on brand new soft tops, my favorite style is the Rampage frameless soft top. Easy on, easy off, easy on the wallet. Less pieces to keep track of since it doesn't require you to use a frame. For about $100 less, you can go with the Smittybilt replacement soft top, which does include a frame that you need to mess with. Good to know what the prices are for a brand new top, that way you know what a good price on a used one is.

Oh, from what I can tell, soft tops require a windshield channel, like this one: Rampage windshield channel, and I believe they also need a Tailgate bar thingy.

You will need the frame, windshield header, tailgate bar, and the plastic door surrounds. Craigslist would be the cheapest route to find a complete softtop for those switching to a hardtop. I do like the frameless rampage soft top.

When i say this jeep is gutted I mean it has no interior, pads on the rollcage, speakers, carpet etc. So since i'm on a budget, you recommend I find a frame first and buy the soft top that fits that?

Since I have half doors, what peices would i need to make that work?

Thanks all for your help!

went that route with mine. came with a hard top and luckily the tub clips but needed the header, tailgate bar, frame, door surrounds, and top. creigs list and amazon is where i looked. i lucked out finding a factory sunrider-complete(everything) still in the (unopened) boxes for $350. he had wanted $700 OBO and my 350 was the best(after 2 weeks waiting). was about a 60 mi round trip to get it but was already better than 1/2 the way(work) amazon always seemed to have some sort of deal going on for 1 top or another. kinda partical to CL since you can look fairly close to home.

The Rampage frameless is sweet,
Full top

Safari mode (it has a built in storage bag for your windows)

With a Smittybilt CRES

When you take it completely off it fits into the included storage bag and can be stored in a closet, under the sofa, folded up and stuffed behind the back seat...
