I threw a machete under the seat for smaller things but would like a small saw to throw in that could handle a small (12-20"?) tree that might be down.

I was thinking of a medium sized bow saw or maybe a pruning saw? What do you guys carry?

If I know I will need it I will bring the chainsaw but I am thinking of something small enough to leave in the jeep all the time. When we take the kids there isn't much room for a chainsaw.

I carry a an aev/silky big boy saw it freaking works great it always amazes me how fast it will rip thru a 20" log. Fits along side my drivers seat so easy to get to. My buddy has the katana aev and it is really bad ass. I watched him almost cut his fingers off with it but that story is for another time. I will say thank god for duct tape.

Looks like those both cut on the pull stroke and are best suited for overhead pruning. A good trail saw for removing a downed tree will cut on the push stroke or in both directions so you can use your body weight rather than only muscle strength.

Jerry,

How did you get a closeup photo of the Moon? Do you have friends at NASA? ;)

Dolmar 510 until last winter. Which is just an absolute small animal. I have had it buried in Oak to the bar and it will not bog down.

The last snow ride, my buddy brought along an old Mac top handle that was a squirrely little peach.

There was a big balsam across the trail and we had it cleared and out of the way in about 15 minutes.

Bucking wedges are your friend.

M-249 is way too big to fit in my Jeep? I like the look of that Wyoming saw.

I carry a simple 21" bow saw. Faster and smaller than an axe. I haven't figured out why people carry axes on their Jeep except for decoration. Though, I also have a hatchet to knock limbs off before sawing up the fallen tree. I keep that hidden because it is nice.

In national parks you can get in big trouble for a concealed weapon charge. I don't know about other states but in Virginia, a hidden Bowie, dirk, Machete or similar scary knife is also a concealed weapon and it matters not if you have a concealed "handgun" permit.

Read your state laws. You may find it to be a non-issue or you may find a hatchet or axe to be an accepted alternative. A $20 folding Corona handsaw from Lowes works great up to about 8" hardwood. For $50, google Silky Big Boy saw.

To get back on track and actually contribute to the thread I carry 2 machetes and I hope to add a small trail ax to the mix.
