What the Chinese consider to be 4 gauge wire

So I bought three sets of battery jumper cables from a website last year because they were advertised as having been made with four gauge cable, which is a big gauge for jumper cables. One for me, my wife, and my son. Most jumper cables are only 6 or 8 gauge so I jumped on these because they were advertised as 4 gauge.

This is the set of jumper cables that was supposedly made with 4 gauge cabling. Looks like big diameter good quality cabling, right? Wrong!

So last year I tried to help jump start a Jeep with my new jumper cables, no go. RrrrRRrrrrRRRrrrr... just not enough to do the job. A friend used his smaller cables to start it with no problem. So without cutting the cable up I tossed my set of the cables and bought a new set of American made 4 gauge jumper cables which work fine.

So yesterday, I tried to use my wife's jumper cables to start her car. Same issue so I tossed them and my son's cables too.

I just cut into her cables to see what the gauge of wiring was inside and I just about couldn't believe what I found. The wiring underneath the insulation MIGHT be 10 gauge wire but that's it. That's the Chinese for you, they don't really care if they're misleading us or not.

So for those of you whose Chinese winches say they include 2 gauge wiring, I wouldn't be so quick to believe it.

Take a look for yourself at what the Chinese manufacturer considered to be "4 gauge" cable afer I cut it apart to see what was really inside...

Not opinion, fact.

Hey, those are 3 times better than 4 gauge!

3X4 = 12

Looks like 10 at the most. Must be that Chinese arithmetic. I hear it's complicated.

I am running out to LA next Monday to look at an all electric transit bus coming over from china. 600K each (w/o the charging station) and I can already see myself telling my company not to even think about considering them.

MY CEO firmly believes in all this cheap crap from china to keep profits up so he cam make his 14M a year.

Not trying to start another one of these arguments, but this is a crying shame.

Maybe they thought AWG described the insulation...
Or perhaps another metric to inch conversion error...

Wouldn't be the first time the Chinese cheated on size.

It's like the old joke... why do Chinese women always park 2" from the curb?

A) cause they've been told for years that it's really 6"

Can't say I'm surprised; I can't ever remember buying something that was made in china and think to myself "this is really good quality!". I certainly have no problem spending the extra cash on something made in America (not that everything made here is top quality, but its usually much better than the chinese crap.)

Agreed I buy American as often as I can, and it is usually what first narrows down what parts I am looking to buy.

While I love supporting American made products, the Japanese are pretty damn good at making computer chips and other various electronics (like my new Sharp Aquos, absolutely stunning).
