What the hell is this part???

Ok. Driving to work today (after battling the snow) this morning I heard a clang. I looked behind and noticed this piece of metal. I'm not 100% sure it came from my jeep, it could have been from someone else and I just drove over it. It looks like a rusted skid plate of some sort, although i guess it could be part of the body. My skids are pretty rusty and falling apart (on my list to replace). I still have most of my gas tank skid plat although some of it is missing. The rectangular one over my transfer case looks fine. I did not notice any protecting my transmission or differentials. I'm assuming that the only skids I would have are stock. My TJ is a 1997. Any help on figuring out what this is would be greatly appreciated. I definitely want to replace this. I attached some photos of it.

I don't think I've seen that on a TJ before. Almost looks like a heat shield for a muffler though (goes between the underside of the tub and the muffler).

Looks like your exhaust or cat shield. They come loose fairly often. You can get it welded back on. If that is what it is, you can look under your jeep and probably see where it came off.

x2 on a heat shield. look under the jeep with a flash light for any really "clean" looking spots.
