You know there are times I might be that tailgater, the only time I get real close is if i am expecting to find a straight strech and am getting ready to pass. What drives me nuts is when that slow person has decided to only go fast on theses opportunities to pass. Decide if you are in a hurry or not and at least let me get by because I am in a bigger hurry than you are.

Tailgaters. Plenty of them here in SoCal.

I usually drive with the flow of traffic or if traffic is light I'll be around 5-10 mph over.

My worst experience was with a woman in a BMW Z4 vert. She drove behind me in traffic for about a mile, tailgating the entire way and nearly crashing into me at each stop light. When the Prius in front of me turned left, I sped up to get ahead of traffic and change lanes but while I was checking my blindspot the woman in the Z4 squeezed between me and the car in the next lane to overtake me (on the right), gave me the finger, and then cut me off and started brake checking me for the next THREE miles! I tried to bait her to get stuck in a group of cars and then catch a left turn light that I need but she didn't care, just cut everyone off and stayed in front of me. On the new street, she continued her shennanigans until we hit a red light.

I got out of my car, walked up to her driver's side window (when I finally found out it was a woman), knocked on the window and yelled at the lady to "knock it off, stop driving wrecklessly, and leave me alone."

She actually got out of her Z4 (nearly forgetting to put it in park!) and then yelled at me "F... You man, you're driving too slow!"

Idiots. They're everywhere.

When we go to the cabin it's 55 miles on a 2-lane road and most the local people will pull over and let you pass if you are behind them for a mile or 2.

When you're driving you know if somebody's coming up behind you pretty fast (he gets bigger and bigger in your rear view mirror!) and it's not worth the hassle to get ticked off. Just get out of the way.

Now for the one in front of you if they don't get out of the way and they're cruising at 35-40 the locals tell me they honk their horn at the person until he moves over. I haven't done that yet.

When I was younger and dumber, I'd get pretty ticked off at tailgaters and reckless drivers. I actually once took on the driver and his three passengers in a literal "street fight" once over tailgating when I was 20.

Now I'm 41 with a wife and three kids and see no reason to end up in a hospital or worse trying to change someone's driving habits. The only thing I need to do at the end of the day is kiss my wife and kids before I go to bed. I no longer need to prove a point to anyone. I go the same speed and that's all when I have a tailgater. I don't do anything to make them drive worse than they already are. I just feel sorry for the fools and hope that they grow up before they hurt themselves or someone else.

Tailgaters don't bother me, until I'm pulling a trailer..and then I get ticked off pretty quick..sorry my big diesel truck and 35 ft trailer loaded with over 4 tons of live weight can't get up and go as fast as your sports car... Can't do it with the big trailer, but with my two horse I take the top windows off the back and hang the horse's tails out...vehicle not held responsible for flying poop

look, I'm all for "driver's education" like a friendly brake check or whatnot, but you guys who are bragging about "making" people pass you on the right of a 4 lane or bigger need to check yourself. It's called the passing lane for a reason. The Moderators should probably shut this thread down; half the crap on here advocates reckless driving and/or criminal damage to property.

Not cool.

wow you hit on something that realy really really frusterates me. i hate tailgaters, they are so bad around here. For the love of god either pass me or get off my ass!!! I do not drive slow and hold up traffic so thier is no reason to be following that closely. Not only does it chip up the idiots car because he is to close but what if i hit the brakes because something ran, or flew out in front of me. This also goes for people driving like an old women and holding up traffic, believe it or not some of us have things to do and places to get to on time, driving that slow is a hazzard too. And since im already bitching i cant stand people that pull out in front of you and you damn near have to lock up your brakes not to hit them, then they never get up to the speed limit. Im on the road alot traveling, and i also drive a semi to haul or crops to market so i see it all. please people use some common sence when driving, and think about what your doing and the situations you put others in with idiot driving.............lol thanks for listening

I just ease off the shoulder a little and sand blast em with the debris that collects there. Trust me it works especially if the shoulder is gravel.

I say brake check them. But here's the trick, use your E brake that way the brake lights don't come on. Gets em everytime

The thing I hate is the bright lights reflecting in your face at night. I have a dimmer for the rear view mirror but not the side mirrors. I wish there were some aftermarket side mirrors with a dimmer that were reasonably priced. I just tap my brakes to try to get them from tailgating or let them pass on a flat stretch.

Now that it's winter and I have a jeep with a soft top I'll wait til someone rides up really close to me then punch the top... The sudden deluge of snow makes up back off a little.

Keep in mind I only do this during daylight hours and only when they are WAY too close to me

My buddy in high school (about 15 years ago) had an old CJ that had the windshield washer hoses rigged to be long enough to be at the rear of the jeep. He just gave them a shower.....

Some of us on this forum are BMW drivers.

That's like saying all Jeep drivers are rednecks or idiots. Doesn't fit us, so be careful about the stereotype.

When I'm in my Jeep, I'm NOT in a hurry. With 2.5L of 4 cylinder fury, I can't be. I go the speed limit or a couple over and leave it at that. If they want to pass, fine. Go ahead. If I'm on the highway, I'm in the right lane 98% of the time. If I'm in my other rides, I'm usually going a bit faster.

I have no beef with being behind somebody going the speed limit unless the flow is faster, as it often is on the interstate or in soCal where I lived near Bakersfield. What DOES bother me is a group of slow drivers playing traffic cop blocking ALL lanes. Wanna play cop? Go to the academy if they'll take you.

I find that people that persist in tailgating me must have a latent desire to eat box steel and Kilby gas tank skids. But a hit of my 'reverse' lights that also have a manual switch tend to make people think twice about what I'm doing. It is particularly effective to turn them on before a light turns green.. It also works at night, but I hesitate to use them too much then.

But the best defense against tailgaters? Offroading.

Nothing like throwing rocks out of your treads at highway speeds to make somebody back off. But they hurt like hell when they come into the open Jeep and get ya in the head or leg!

ugh, what's worse then tailgaters? people who drive too slow.

If you're in the left lane and you're being tailgated? You're too slow, get over.
You've been driving in the left lane for a while and someone gets up behind you? You're too slow, get over.

Flinging water, oil, your horse's crap is a criminal offense and you'd be held liable if something was to happen as a result. Brake checking is even worse. When it's a single lane or you're in the right lane going the speed limit, then by all means, tailgaters suck. But if you're the one effing up, and I see it all the time, well a big eff you.

Big EZ is right. Yeah tailgaters suck, but we all know that at one time or another we have all done it. But what really pisses me off are people who just cruise in the left lane. The left lane is not the place for everyone to play or pretend they are the police. If you are going slower and notice a car coming up behind you, move over. But like I siad you shouldn't be cruising in the left lane anyways.

i just switch on the rear fog lights and they get the hint

When i drove my mustang i aimed the rear wiper sprayer up so it would spray them with water or whatever i decided to put in the rear tank so funny.

Im now thinking about just mounting a paintball gun in the rear bumper that'll teach these f'ing Jersey drivers

thanks for the backup, Sparky. a few others share our sentiment but seriously- this is the most disheartening thread on this forum. I don't give 3 craps how slow your badass heavily modded 25k rig with D60s and 6.13 gears is; if it's not highway capable put it on the freaking trailer or stay outta the left lane- unless you're passing someone. And as soon as you're done with that, move right. In most states "following too closely" is exactly as serious of an infraction as "obstructing traffic".

I asked my insurance agent one time if a trucker could be liable for windshield damage when they get off the pavement and throw up gravel, he said if it comes off the road its a road hazard but if it comes off the vehicle its a liability.
