What year did Jeep....

What year did Jeep start putting the D44 in wranglers? I would walk outside and look at my axel but I am stationed in Germany and my Jeep is in storage in the states. I have a '97 Sport 4.0, do I even have a chance of being equipped with the D44?

I don't think so, but i could be wrong..believe that sports all came stock with d35. But just to keep your hopes up if you didn't buy it new there's always a chance someone swapped in one!

The Dana 44 rear axle has always been an optional extra-cost upgrade axle for the TJ so it's possible your '97 came with one. They were not standard in any TJs including the Sport or Sahara except for a few special models like the Rubicon, Unlimited, and a few limited special editions.

Great info, I appreciate the answers you guys are great! I am pretty sure my axels are the stock D35 as well. Hopefully I will be okay b/c as of right now I don't plan on running anything bigger than 33's.

Will do Rubi! Next time my Dad pulls it out of storage and drives it I'll ask him to snap a couple pics.

As others have said, you do have a chance of having a D44 under your Jeep. If getting someone to go look at it while it's in storage is a hardship, you could always send me the last 8 characters of your VIN. From that info, I can check with Chrysler to see how your Jeep was optioned. Maybe that will be easier for you to do.

The VIN# by itself can't be decoded with a simple VIN decoding chart to know what rear axle was installed. Only the factory can provide that information when you send them the entire VIN #.

Easier is just have someone back home take a picture of the rear of the rear axle and send it to you so you can compare it to the photos below.

The Dana 35c looks like the first photo below, the stronger Dana 44 looks like the second photo.

I just ran your vin an unfortunately you don't have a 44. D35 is what it says from the factory unless someone already swapped before you bought it.

F.Y.I. Any Mopar dealer can run your vin and all they need is the last 8 like he posted. They can pull the same build sheet just like if you were to email them direct.

So in other words I'm even luckier than I previously thought - I bought a non-rubicon TJ before I knew to look at the rear axle... but... I have a 44 under there. Makes me Oh-so-happy that I didnt pull the trigger on the first jeep i was seriously looking at... an over priced, starting to rust '02. It had a 35
