I went and looked at a 97 wrangler for sale yesterday. it has 68,000 miles on it, a 4 inch lift and 33" tires. heres the problem with it that made me wonder. it has an accel ignition system and i think it was a jet performance chip in it. i started test driving it, we got 3/4 of a mile down the road and it blew a fuse. the engine died and all the gauges shut off. the owner said he washed it a while ago and it does this once in a while and it has something to do with the aftermarket ignition system. he threw in a new 10 amp fuse behind the glove compartment and the gauges came back on and it started back up. he wants $5900. I think if i flashed $4,500 in front of him he might take it. is it worth the headache? I'm worried after i buy it, it's gonna be a bigger electrical problem than i wanna deal with.
i just bought a 97 4cyl, 5spd with 122k miles on it that blue booked for $5200, for $4000 just for reference. $4500 for 68k miles is a pretty good deal. if the aftermarket iginition is the culprit and it blows fuses all the time, it probably wasn't installed correctly somewhere. it likely would be a simple fix. finding the problem may be another issue, but for $4500, you could buy it, fix it, and sell it for at least another $2000 on top of what you paid for it. or just keep it and enjoy a cheap jeep.
