Try running a restricted air cleaner. I can drive however I want and still get 18-19 mpg around town and 22-23 mpg highway, the only time I get worse is pulling a trailer that weighs over half as much as my TJ then I get 12.9 mpg or so and thats going up and down hills averaging 70mph switching between fourth and fith gear.

Highest I've gotten is 19mpg after my regear. I average 17mpg or so. If I am heavy on the skinny pedal I can knock it down to 9mpg.

'01, pretty well stock, 2.5" lift, 31x10.5 gets around 18-20 where I drive. It also depends on which gas pump I go to as one in particular seems to get more in the tank than others before it shuts off.

Did great on the highway under 60 with the top off though.

looking to swap with a 1.9l TDI eventually..then I should be hittin high 20's low 30's

I haven't checked the math at the pump yet, but the ECO gauge on my 09 Sahara is indicating between 22 and 23 on the highway. I'm not drafting or managing the hills, either. And I've found it's about 1 MPG less efficient when using the cruise. I've just been noticing it on a lot of highway driving I'm doing lately. I keep planning to log a fill-up and check the system's math.

I have been driving my Tj for 11 years and a Yj for 3. Almost 15 years with the 4.0.

@KJeeper

Yeah, I know. I was just throwing in my two cents about the 3.7s. I'm shocked that I'm seeing that much economy (on the gauge, at least) from mine. If those 4.0s are actually getting those numbers too, I'm really floored.

I guess the point I clumsily tried to make was that I'm not sure I trust the ECO function. I'd just like to see for myself. Then again, the way the government beats them up about promoting fuel economy, maybe those 15-19 MPG numbers are just way down the curve. I dunno!

Not sure about the jeeps with a computer. I have a speedo gear. I've read on here that the factory over compensates with the speedo gear-speed being 1-2% faster. This makes sense because most guys who's jeeps came with the 30" tires, when they upgrade to 31's the speed measured by gps is actually more accurate. don't need to upgrade the speedo I guess.

My jeep came with a 215/15 tire (28-29") I have 31's now. I need to put in my new gear today.

I let my tank run dry (gas ready) and then I put in the full 19 gallons.

My odometer read 285 miles = around 15 mpg but considering my speedo is off I'm thinking maybe 16-17. Seems to be the norm for the 4.0

You think Al puts out hot air, you ought to see his old lady generate heat. Last time she went out on one of her 'moral's in media' speech's, she was wearing 6" stilleto's, fishnet's and a skirt so short it should have been declared a cocktail napkin by the designer. Now that was H-O-T. It's too bad she can't focus that energy on what the country needs instead of more noise.

I wasn't worried about flex. I just didn't want any rubbing. And with those babies, all is good when I'm aired down climbing.

Im not sure how much of a difference it will make in yours. But when I had 33s and 3.07 gears in my 92 yj the gas mileage was horrible. When I went to 4.10 it brought back a strong 5th gear and my mileage got a decent amount better.

Just bought '99 Sport

I am new to the Jeep world, at least having my own, since I just bought a '99 Wrangler Sport. I am loving the beast, but the mpg is pathetic.

As a learning process, I have noticed that how I drive it makes all the difference, and that I'll need to be the old geezer on the hwy to manage it better.

It has 31's, stock everything else as far as I can tell. But, if I get my way, it'll be substantially altered by next season. My list is sorta moderate, based on 35/12.5's on steel 15x10 3.75's, you can do the math I'm sure. : ) Yeah, I'm ambitious.

I think there may be a bit more to it than just driving style. The intake is not bad looking, but it has a greasy look to it with some grit. What other mechanical issues might play to the mpg issue? Any input?

Just looking for some ideas of what I might want to watch out for.

Thanks for your help

97 TJ Sport with 3.07 gears and a 4.0 with a manual transmission and Hardtop. 2.5" to 3" lift on 31 x 10.50 Semi Mudder Tires (very Noisy). Average 15 to 17. Much better than my old Dodge Power Wagon with 6" lift, a cammed 360 with highrise manifold. That was 8 to 10. Thats why I have the Jeep now

I average about 17-19, but I drive mostly highway.

On the weeks I drive mostly on the street, I get about 15-17.

My YJ on the other hand......got 12.5 on a consistent basis.
