Where do I find a totaled Rubicon???

The transmission in my Jeep is toast! I've weighed all the options and the decision has been made.... My Jeep is going to get parked and I'm going to buy a commuter car to drive back and forth to work.

I'm looking for a 42RLE to replace the dead one that is in my Jeep. At the same time, I'd like to replace the transfer case with a 241 out of a Rubicon. And while I'm at it, I'm thinking that front and rear D44's with the standard air lockers and the 4.10s out of a Rubicon would be nice to do as well.

So I'm thinking that what I really need is to find is a roll-over Rubicon that has been totaled, but that has the power train and axels intact. I know that there are people on here that have taken totaled Jeeps and rebuilt them. My question is "Where did you get it?" I've checked Craig's list and called a few Jeep junk yards, but no luck so far. I'm looking for some creative ideas as to where else to check.

Thanks!

I would just camp out the junkyards but the jeep ones tend to pick that stuff off quick.

Look at those car & truck trader mags
around here there are 3 or 4 dealers that deal in insurance/damaged claim
Lot drive only
cars some even just repos
Some big insurance comps even sell their cars

Have you tried Scottys Jeep in Fontana? I don't have any first hand experience with them, but they have been in business forever.

Good luck Brian.

I talked to the people at DaveysJeeps about a 42RLE.... Problem was that they wanted more for shipping than the cost of the trans. I'm in So. Cal.

Tried Scotty's when I was just looking for a trans. They strip everything down to the smallest parts possible. They told me that they never sell whole wrecked vehicles.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Keep 'em comming!

I can see it now: I rent a truck, then I start stalking a Rubicon. When the time is right, I hit it in just the right location and then tell the driver that if his insurance company totals it, I'd like to buy it from him.

Try looking for auto auctions too. When the ins co totals the vehicle, they auction them to the salvage guys. Probably best to get the entire jeep, take what you want and then sell off/scrap what's left.

The "jeep" salvage yard down here is best avoided IMO. They tend to want to sell you new aftermarket parts with a price mark-up rather than any real deals on salvage prices.

I heard that they were a waste of time from another friend of mine.

Look for teenagers with rich daddies on the Rubicon trail in MOAB.
