Where to mount hilift on swing out

Ok, so I got a High Rock tire carrier and want to make a hi-lift mount on it. I have found that I have two choices.

1. Straight up right next to the hinges. Puts less stress on the hinges while the tailgate is opened. Easier removal and mounting, will make a platform it will sit on. May stick up higher than top. Might hinder mounting my 35.

2. Horizontal across the top bar of the swing out. I like the look better. Looks more compact and hidden. Will put more stress on the hinges while opened.

Will try to get pics of me holding the jack in the two positions.

I think the horizontal mounting looks cleaner and looks like it would be less apt for limbs and such to snag on it.

I agree with horizontal.....looks cleaner. Mine is vertical (when it's on) and I don't hate it but horizontal looks much better.

Side note: do I see Airborne wings on that bumper?

I voted horizontal. Cleaner and less chance to catch on stuff.

I have the same tire carrier and am curious as to how you would accomplish the horizontal mounting with the minimal space provided. Also, if mounted horizontally, would access to the tailgate latch be blocked??

Horizontal all the way. Cleaner look for sure.

Go for horizontal if you still can open the gate latch...I have seen other jeeps on the trail with vertical mount and just waiting for one of them to get ripped right off with a low branch!

Well, every one I show says horizontal so I guess that's how I'm going to mount it.

Airborne wings? Never jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. Though I have jumped out of a perfectly good ship. I was in the Navy.

I plan on welding tabs off the top bar. Most likely will use a tab on both sides of the lift with two mounting points.

It has to be shifted to the driver side for it to open without hitting and that actually puts the hi-lift mechanism in the best position to still get to the latch. How I have it positioned in the picture is just about where it will end up. Just slightly higher.

Also If I have a problem mounting it with just flat tabs. My backup plan is to get 1-1/2" exhaust clamps and weld the tabs onto it.
