which engine will fit

My 98 tj has the 2.5 and im considering an engine swap. I've noticed that there are several jeep cherokee's for sale locally with 4 liter engines. is this the same 4.0 that i would want? Since im looking to keep it as stock as possible is there any years i should look for? I'd assume i need to find one fuel injected and just gut the whole thing. Any advice is welcome.

Yes they are the same 4.0 motors. Find one from around the same year as your TJ and you should be ok.

Ummmm, your gonna need more than the motor....tranny, transfercase, and motor mounts cut off and rewelded on to start. Then your prolly gonna want a different engine harness. Also, your tach won't work right, so you have to get one from a 4.0 wrangler.

Its not a big deal, but it can be if you don't know what your up against.

Really to be honest...If your going for an engine swap then make it worth it, Go for a V8.
Like Buildem said the actual process and other parts needed is a little more involved since your changing the size of the motor.

I say go V8 swap or just sell this jeep with the 2.5 and buy one with a 4.0.

I'd sell the Jeep and buy another with a 4.0L already installed. As mentioned above, there is a LOT to converting from the 2.5L to the 4.0L. Engine wiring harness, engine mounts, transmission, transfer case, front and rear driveshafts, and the ECM (engine computer) would all have to be changed. Well, the transfer case could be modified by swapping its input shaft from a 21 to 23 spline to work but...
When you have a choice, buy American.

Yeah I wasn't 100 percent sure on the case, but I know on the YJ's the input splines are different and its easier to just find another case versus swap that out.
