who here has a winch on a stock TJ

I have a bunch of mood planned, but of course... These will take time to implement.

But to start with I'm looking at a winch...
But in sure how it will go with the stock suspension...
Not looking at bars yet... Just on to the mounting plate on to the stock bumper.

What are your guys (and gals) thoughts.

My old TJ got a winch before it got anything else. It was a wise investment as it helped me both offroad and on (in the case of winching myself out of a snowbank) while I saved up for suspension and tires.

The TJ is pretty capable out of the box. The winch extends that capability. Big tires and suspension and other upgrades extend it even further. That said, it's not a bad idea to get a winch mounting plate, a good winch (Warn M8000 is the one I recommend) and run it with your stock bumper. It doesn't attach to the bumper itself but rather the winch plate that attaches to the front frame, just behind the bumper. It shares a common front hole with the bumper so you can swap a tube bumper on later.

No problem mounting a winch on a 100% stock Jeep. As you mentioned, all you need is a mounting plate and that's pretty much it. Sometimes a 3/4" spacer on top of the front springs would be a good thing to compensate for the weight of the winch but not everyone needs even that. If you wanted to add that spacer, that's a pretty minor job that can be done with nothing more than a jack and basic hand tools.

Warn M8000 sitting on a raised mounting plate on my stock tj, I'm assuming the raised or flat mounting plate is based on what bumper you have. Mine came with it so I don't know for certain on that.

its an investment you wont regret doing first im pretty much stock and if i dont buy new tires im picking up a winch soon. So many times i wished i had one already where tires and a lift wouldnt have helped me.

Winch Mount

Thanks for the pictures. I am still having trouble finding a mounting plate. See my post earlier today. I see the raised plate mounted to the standard bumper, which looks like just the ticket, but have not been able to find one online. I did find a very nice bumper with the plate incorporated for $499.99. I would prefer to go with another option, a much cheaper option.
Does anyone remember where they got theirs.
Thanks

Tomken makes a great winch plate, it even has a little mini-bullbar on it to help protect the winch. I had it on my previous TJ and liked it better than any other winch mounting plate I've ever seen.

You can see it at TOMKEN MACHINE - Search Results

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link. One more question: Does mounting that Tomken require that you remove the sway bar cover that is right behind and above the bumper? I would like to keep it on if I could.

Jerry, that's a pretty sweet winch plate. Looks like it would bolt into where the factory tow hooks would go, is that true?

What if you don't off-road? You still want it? Are there any uses for a winch around the house?

Beats a $200 winchout from a towing co when your wife(or husband) or kid gets stuck in mud or snow.

Yes, all separate winch plates bolt down through the bumper into the frame where the tow hooks or bumper mounting bolts go.

So I've got the winch (Superwinch LP8500), the plate is on the way (T-MAX Jeep Winch Mounting Tray). Read up on the installation, the plate goes onto the frame where the tow hooks are and the sway bar. The sway bar might give me issues apparently...

So maybe this is a dumb question but I gotta ask: do the bolts that go into the feet of the winch sit on top of the bumper or do I drill holes through the bumper so the feet are bolted to the plate and the bumper? Never having done it I would think I'd have to drill through the bumper as well otherwise there wouldn't be enough clearance for the bolt head?

Any advice is appreciated!

The four mounting bolts pass up through the winch mounting plate and thread into four small captured nuts that are in the bottom of the winch. They virtually disappear and are inaccessible once the winch and its mounting plate are bolted down on top of the bumper.

Thanks Jerry...that also saves me the embarrassment of putting the plate on first then trying to figure out how to put the winch on that!

I appreciate it! Was afraid I might be missing something there in the destructions!

I want to do this to my stock TJ also. I thought I would have to lose my tow hooks, but it looks like I can keep them from what I see here. Also, what about those winches that come with the fairlead on it, does it have to come off for the plates that have the fairlead mount? Forgive me if the questions seem simple, but I don't know jack about winches.

On my mounting plate, which is the Rough Country one, the roller fairlead attaches to the front of the plate.
