Why are ARB lockers more money then Detroit lockers.

Why the price differance? Is it just name or is one better than the other. Also do the work the same way or are they different?

The ARB is a selectable air controlled locker. You can engage or disengage at your liking.

The Detroit....depending on the specific one your looking at..."there are different types of detroit lockers"....are either always locked or a automatic locker.

Thanks. I seen the detroits with air locking that was controlled by a switch to. I am thinking of starting a parts pile in my garauge for a year or two down the road project.

It wasn't a Detroit-anything, they make no air controlled lockers. They USED to make an electrically controled locker called the E-Locker but it didn't last long...

Maybe that is what I seen. So I'm guessing if I'm spending money I should go with the arb? I just looked and eaton still makes an electric locker but I'm thinking the ARB.

As my option...yes.

But it depends on your use of your jeep trail only ...sure throw a detroit in there.

If you drive it daily....ARB.

Yep...there are a few locations that still have a few E-lockers for sale. Not many but a few.

yeh i got the hobart locker in the rear


and ARB is expensive beause they are awesome and will take the shock of an axle shaft breaking without harming the locker itself... they are very reliable and stong, noone has built a better designed airlocker, some have tried but they cant stand up like the arb does...

Do you know what a lincoln locker is? Its an old expression pertaining to when you take your Lincoln Welder to your spider gears. Hence the lincoln locker

Actually Detroit (when they were TracTech) made the DETROIT ELEC-TRAC, which basically was a limited slip TrueTrac that would lock up via an electrical switch. While a good idea, the product experienced a lot of problems and the location of the actuator outside the unit did not increase the product's popularity with off-roaders seeking a stout rock crawling product. Lastly, the ELEC-TRAC did not fair well with tires > 35".

Not to be confused but the E Locker is made by Eaton and is not the ELEC-TRAC (limited slip while unlocked). The Eaton E Locker is just like the ARB or OX lockers i.e. "open" when disengaged but functions as a "spool" when engaged. Recently Eaton released a Dana35 version that works with 30 splined shafts .

They are a PITA to get working in a short wheelbase TJ due to their very stiff cable that isn't easily routed so it works smoothly. I personally would not install an Ox Locker. If I were in the market for a selectable locker, I'd go for an ARB followed by Tractech's new E-Locker.

I really like my ARB lockers. They work great and with them I have a compressor with that I can air up the tires.

Hopefully that's not the base level ARB compressor. It doesn't have a sufficient duty cycle for refilling big Jeep tires, nor is it fast enough to be anything but frustrating.

On that note, what about ARB's mid-sized compressor (CKMA12)? Would that be a reliable & fairly quick tire inflator (doing all 4 in short order)?

"Fairly quick" is the thing that none of ARB's compressors are known for. ARB produces an excellent locker and an excellent compressor for locking their lockers but even their upgraded compressors are fairly slow at reinflating tires.

Personally, I think ARB's air compressor should be left alone to perform locker duty and nothing else. That way, odds are very good that it will work when you need to lock your axle.

Personally, I have a belt-driven compressor that puts out a huge amount of air volume out like my shop compressor but it's an all-day job to install and get working. Actually, a portable compressor that gets high marks is the one sold at Costco for something like $59, I think it comes in a bag. It puts out a decent amount of air for the $$$.

Just avoid all the $19 and $29 compressors you see sold in the auto parts stores that scream how much pressure they can put out... i.e. 220 PSI!!!! The amount of air pressure is irrelevent as even a tiny hand operated bicycle pump can pump a racing bike tire up to 110 psi, that's what I used on my Bianchi road bike whose tires required 110 psi. An air compressor suitable for refilling big Jeep-size tires has to be able to pump out a lot of volume, not air pressure... so the biggest air volume compressor, expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM) is what you want. Anything approaching 2 CFM or better into pressure is what you want. Ignore the ones that brag about their CFM rating without telling you into what pressure it can achieve that CFM. Afterall, you can achieve several CFM out of your own mouth into the open air around you but you sure can't push any CFM out if you tried to use your mouth to add air to a tire that had 25 psi in it already.

I have the CKMA compressor with a 2.5 gallon air tank.
Airing up one 35x12.5x15 tire from 10 to 30 psi takes about 2-2.5 minutes. For me thatīs fast enough. Itīs way faster than a friends VIAIR OBA system with a VIAIR 460C compressor

The ARB compressor does 2.65 CFM with no load and 2.18 CFM at 30 psi.
The VIAR 460P does 1.66 CFM at no load and only 1.34 CFM at 30 psi.

The VIAR 400C is nearly as good as the ARB but it is only a 33% duty cycle compressor.

Btw. I just bought a second ARB compressor. Airing up tires will be twice as fast then.
