Thats what I'm hearing...get over yourself. If thats the worst thing that happened to you that day be thankful.
I have a friend in ICU dying right now, I think he would say "that's it? REALLY?" or "trade ya".
I know this, that same cop would rush into your burning jeep to save you or take a bullet to save your life. So quit crying and have a nice day

What kills me is a young student gets stopped by one cop for a minor infraction and then has the nerve to ask "Why are cops so ignorant?". Reminds me of that song from the sixties 'Why is everyone always pickin' on me?

Didn't read all of the post, and not all of yours, but the "convo" could have gone like this:

Cop: Why do you have your fog lights on when there is no fog?

You: I didn't realize they were on, but I'll surely turn them off.

Cop: Thanks and try to be aware of that in the future.

You: Will do and have a nice evening.

End of "convo".

Why is it that young kids think their smart arse attitude is acceptable to all in the this day and time. Some time, it is just best to keep your mouth shut and move on. The cops, sometime, need a little ego boost, and when they think they can do something simple to make that happen to them, then let them do it and go on. If it's a serious case, which this certainly wasn't, then you take them to court over it. Chances are they won't even show up and your case will be thrown out, but you handled it wrong. I'm not a cop, but I've learned over the years that if you act like a smartarse, they will treat you as such.

My advice is dont argue. Wether you are right or wrong turn em off. If you get cited into court that's when you argue. Not sure on laws in Cali but cars come equipped with day time running lights everywhere. they are for safety. My argument is its a "safety issue". It's alot harder for someone who hits your vehicle to say I didn't see it if you have your lights on.
The other bit of advice is dont categorize all "cops" the same. Have you ever had a bad customer service experience at a store or restaurant, then went to another and got great service. Not all "cops" are the same. Just my 2 cents

No different then another post that claimed all jeep dealers suck. One person has one bad experience and lo and behold.

There probably is a cop somewhere on some glock/cop site posting "why are students so ignorant?"
Man I tried to tell this kid his fog lights were on and improperly aimed and holy crap you would have thought I took his birthday away spoiled little brat lol.

"Kicking and screaming" for a headlight disagreement? Give me a break.

You're the reason the rest of us have to deal with the occasional picky cop.

I am 45 years old and a former Army Captain. When it comes to cops, I use a lot of sir sandwiches and I don't care how old they are. It just works better and allows for a lot smoother conversations.

I have been stopped four times in town the last two years and no tickets. I still wave to the guys.

Most cops don't want to be dicks, they just want to make a point and keep peace.

For all you folks that think it's ok to argue with a cop just because you think your right.. Way to make yourself a target for the future. If that is the way you are built go for it. But unless you are gpoing to spend your life driving the speed limit, stopping for every stop sign and not the roll once in awhile, or even better yet the occasional drink after work. More power to you. Oh yea we also drive Jeeps that are usually persolalized and easy to pick out in a crowd... Have fun kids...

I'm a fan of LEO. For the most part, they are doing their jobs. I can imagine they get so much attitude and disrespect, if I got just a fraction of what they get in my current job - I'd quit.

I like to think of myself as a reasonable person. First why is the cop wasting his time and taxpayer money pulling someone over to question "why are you driving with your fog lights on when there is no fog" this seems senseless? I certainly agree when pulled over or approached by LEO treat them with respect they are doing their job! I think most LEO are good people just trying to keep everyone safe. There will always be exceptions to this you will find at times some just enjoy the power trip they get by pushing people around but this is not limited to just LEO you will encounter people like this all through life.

Are some if these guys on a power trip? Sure. So what? Who cares? Let them have it....they get little else. They work for peanuts and are there for you when needed.

So while its easy to get upset, they go home to their 80k house on a 40k salary while some of your guys are hanging out at your parents pools and driving the jeep they bought for you. Giving a little respect never hurts. These are the guys who will always be there for you in a pinch regardless of why they think of you.

If you think about the beam pattern of a fog light and the position the cop was in compared to that of the Jeep, according to the original post, it is quite possible the cops vision was affected by the glare.

Just say'n...

It doesn't look like txfx is coming back to this post. Maybe he sees he's in the minority with his attitude on this subject. You're in college. Grow up while you're there. You really don't know as much as you think you do, or as much as I thought I did when I was that age.

In fairness it does sound like he has actually come away from this learning something. Just some words of advice. Arguing with LEO will get you no where. Telling us chapter and section will get you nowhere. I personally would have cited you the minute you started arguing with me. That shit is for the court not for the side of the road. You want to plead your case do it in court we get paid, usually OT to go so saying I'll see you in court is a good thing to us. Also no cop out there likes a "curbside lawyer". Hell we dont even like real lawyers most of the time. I probably wouldnt have bothered with fog lights to begin with but some guys will.

Its obvious it was a cop who wanted to show he was more powerful and wanted someone to stroke his ego by saying yes sir sorry sir ok sir.

V C Section 24403 Foglamps

Foglamps

24403. (a) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two foglamps that may be used with, but may not be used in substitution of, headlamps.

[B] IMO this means you can't drive with only foglights on at night instead of headlights. I don't believe you were in the wrong but it's wise not to argue. If he wants to be a dick, tell him to give you a ticket and take it to court... otherwise just be respectful.

Why cant the cop be respectful of an individual and the law. Standing up for your rights sir is what our country is founded on. Suggesting it is wrong to be a person standing for what is right is a horrible suggestion.

I retired from the USMC 23 years ago, got a job as a campus police officer, and have "risen through the ranks". Our officers are professional, courteous, and are well-trained. They get customer service training, among many other "non-cop" training sessions. We do investigate complaints and take them seriously. I know there are people who should not be police officers and they are, for the most part, not successful in the long term. The profession has its own way of weeding them out.

Lots of interesting observations on this thread. Nothing at all about Jeeps (other than the originator happened to be driving one, but it could just as easily have been some inferior 4WD vehicle). So I'll throw in one little Jeep tidbit for humor's sake. Someone earlier in this thread mentioned an officer might be ranting on a cop/Glock site about college kids. Well, if you are young and looking for a challenging career choice, consider being a police officer. You can get a JEEP AND a Glock -- two of the very best tools ever made. Love them both.

BTW, I have been doing this a very long time, have never written a traffic ticket.

I never said it was wrong to stand up for what is right but there is a place for it and it is called court. I do agree a cop needs to be respectful but it should go both ways.

ah that was me lol and I have written more citations then I could count at elast 100 per week (10 years on motors working high traffic areas) I do however treat peopel with respect and I have never written a ticket for contempt of cop. I will be polite and curtious regardless of how you treat me and if my initial intent was to give you a warning prior to actually having the face to face you will still get a warning. If my intent was to give you a ticket (blantant acts) after the face to face I might determine that a warning will suffice and most likely well have the desired results ie complience to the law. I have been at this for 25 years and recently retired and rehired on a University campus to enjoy a much less hectic pace. Be safe.

I'm still here, and I'm reading everyone's posts. Its interesting reading everyones point of view. Not much left for me to say, however, after analyzing what happend now I can see I ccould have handled the situation better, but it was my first experience with campus pd over a stupid topic.
