You be safe, too. Being a motor officer, enforcement was a huge part of your job. I spent today at a seminar on keeping the campus safe, complying with the many (and ever increasing) federal reporting requirements, etc.

And I would like to ad that the cheap ass crappy, dim, blue lights people buy to put in their rice rockets or other crappers can not be adjusted properly so they do not blind others in front. They just need to go away.

my young, young friend. you have much to learn other than what is taught in your textbooks. sounds like you have already by realizing you're gonna see that cop all over campus. you can attract more bees with honey than with vinegar is true no matter if you're at customer service at wal-mart returning something and needing their help or getting pulled over by a law man. I'm sure you have better things to do than waste your time in court over a citation. don't be one of those who puts cops on the defensive by automatically recording them on your phone. thats going to annoy him even if he doesn't say it does and the pen is always mightier than the sword! but if you're being blatantly mistreated by all means stand your ground which you sound like you will. many on here have given you some sound advice and some are just asking for it. i envy you already, wish i would've have a jeep while i was doing my college tour, enjoy your time there drive safely and don't draw attention to yourself.

So just out of curiosity, did you check into the laws and regulations on your campus?

The laws you are referencing may state that your fog lights are legal under California law. But some campus's have rediculous laws that you have to follow while driving on the school property. Maybe the campus cop pulled you over for some weird campus regulation/law. As dumb as some law about no fog lights sounds, it may actually exist.

Do a google search for dumb laws some time and see how much rediculous stuff you find.

Or another option, maybe your lights got tweaked somehow and they really were out of allignment. Maybe some mounting hardware worked it's way loose and road/off-road vibrations readjusted your lights for you.

I just installed some new headlights on mine. To look at the beams on the ground you would think they were aimed down. But then I looked up and a reflective sign on a 3rd floor balcony was glaring back at me, also I got flashed by 3 drivers on the way to work thinking I had my high beams on. I am not sure how the laws of physics allow for this but bottom line, my headlights are not adjusted like i thought they were and I need to fix it before I get pulled over.

I always get a kick out of the doughnut jokes. I have run 9 marathons including Boston pr is 2:48 slowest is 3:00:05, work out every day and run 40-50 miles a week and l still get fat over weight pimple faced kids who think doughnut jokes are still funny. Last time I heard one I looked at the over weight woman and said "I bet you eat more doughnuts then I do"
We were in the food line I had a salad and she had a big piece of cake on her tray. The checker simply said "touche"

Re: Why are cops so Ignorant?

the Campus Cop, may have been overreacting, your lights may have been aimed wrong or just reflecting and caught his eyes wrong. When I have a migraine I am super sensitive to any light... That's not the point. I worked for 12 years in the middle of a big college campus and I can tell you that these guys have a tough job. You try dealing with people that think they know everything about everything and do it every day. College students are bastards for the most part, they think that bc they are away from mom and dad that they are the kings or queens of the world. It gets really old really fast when punks think they know more about everything than you and feel the need to tell you. Even though they are dead wrong.

For those blaming liberals, this has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative. It is a failure of parents to actually parent and instill respect for others. And from my experience the more money the kid came from the more entitled they feel. But at the end of the day it's the parents that don't actually discipline their children, that make the biggest bastards.

I SUPPORT CHILD LEASH LAWS.

Well it only took to the end of page 1 to hear the words "probable cause"!!!!! Wendy - TJ ---just a FYI, an officer doesn't have to have PC to stop you, they just need reasonable suspicion.
You must be in that same math class with the Ignorant OPer in saying that "all cops are ignorant".
I am glad to say that I've read all these posts and am pleasantly surprised to hear that almost all of you know how hard the police have it.

Hey Wendy and OP maybe if the time ever comes that you need the police for an emergency you can't handle then hopefully you've changed your view slightly about the them.

Jerry - at least this post was a small break from the "hey I'm new here what kind of lift kit should I buy?" Posts. Lol

I have a large number of friends in Law Enforcement, and you know what? Their Human. Humans can not know every law, nor can they reasonably be expected to. In fact lawyers don't even know the law by heart, they have paralegals to look it up and law books (as well as the internet) so they can look it up in. On top of that you have two types of law with the first being codified law which is what your legislatures make. An example of codified law would be the penalty for speeding. Secondly you have what is called case law which is how the courts interpret the law. An example of case law would be the Miranda Warning.

What officers are trained to know in most cases are general provisions and how to look up what the law is specifically. For common violations (Speeding, domestic violence, ect.) they do get to know the law very well. If the officer has specialized duties such as Narcotics Enforcement then they get to know that particular area of law very well. I would like to point out that the side of the road or in the parking lot is not the place to argue the law, there a place made specifically for that function and its called court.

I have a huge problem with everyone saying just take it. The hell with that, I can question authority as long as I'm respectful. Those who don't are sheep and will be lead around on a collar. You should ALWAYS question authority! But again be respectful.

... Again, over fog lights?

If getting out of a traffic stop and potential ticket means flicking a switch off, I'd rather do that than tussle over something so incredibly silly.

Pick your battles. Call me a "sheep" if you will, but this one ain't worth fighting.

As long as we aren't flaming or trolling then there shouldnt be a problem. Its a topic away from the everyday posts.

Just to clear things up, I messed up on the title, I didn't think much about ehen i was writing it but now, as someone stated in here, it paints with a broad stroke. And I'm sorry if I offended anyone because of it.

I think that you have cleared things up after your initial post. While the original title was a little off you have explained yourself and taken criticism in stide and have seemed to come away with a better outlook and understanding. I commend you on your continuation of your studies and for taking this post as a learning experience. Keep on keeping my friend.

This is the TJ technical section of the forum. There is an off-topic section.

Not that spraying plasti-dip on your dash board or whatever is a technical subject.

I've been trying my hand at being the popo for about 6.5 years now. I've found a distinct pattern, and this thread only confirms my theory.

Warning = complaint
Ticket = no complaint

Most of my formal complaints came from traffic stops where I cut someone a break and wrote them a warning, didn't tow their ride, or as in this case even just rolled down my window and talked to them like a big boy. My theory is that a simple warning doesn't give someone the chance to argue their case. Since they don't get that chance, they feel the need to vent their side of the story to someone. In most cases the only direction the person feels they can go is with a formal complaint, which doesn't make any sense. In this case the OP turned to fellow Jeepers, and most likely took no further action once he saw a few other reasonable person's responses.

If I write someone a ticket and tow their car, they're mad but they're issued a court date where they plan to put up a dramatic and convincing defense. That court date is approximately 1 month after the offense. In reality, 95% or more never show up in court or just pay the ticket and move on. I think once people calm down and vent their side of the story to a few reasonable people, realize they weren't as violated as they felt at the time, they no longer feel the need to go to court and plead their case...hence not showing up in court or just paying the ticket.

In the end...the dude simply spoke to you and informed you that your lights blinded him. The "file a formal complaint" and donut jokes for not even a formal warning but a conversation are truly ignorant. So next time you get a ticket instead of a warning, thank those types of people! Just my $0.02

I would love to be a fly on the wall when someone walks into a cop shop to make a formal complaint about receiving less than a warning.

We need more level-headed folks like you, kosmo.

Trick question right? Uh, maybe don't drive around on campus with your fog lights on? Use that other position on your fog light on/off switch?
