i got my 2006 golden eagle wrangler from Denver area and paid 3k less than dealers around here in NJ would have been asking for one if they had it, regular Sports with similar mileage selling for at least 2k more. TJs will run you anywhere from $6500-a lot more. finding a steal is tough, unless u stumble upon someone just dumping one. then you get the repair bill for what u might have bought for a steal. i see 97s going for 9K sometimes and shake my head.

jeeps are known to keep their value too because of their engine. the wrangler has one of the highest resale values of any car

definately get what you pay for. just remember, you will buy other things when you buy the jeep. ive spent at least 1500$ on items that i wanted that didnt need for the jeep already since i owned it half doors/soft windows, upper sliders for half doors, hard top/and wiring, bikini top, side steps.

In Central Virginia, I got a 2004 Sahara Ed w/ ~10,000 miles for about 17k 4 years ago. It was clean, fairly rust-free, and ran strong. It's been reliable ever since. I feel I paid what it was worth.

Keep looking. Got my 97 in December for 5K. Both tops, full doors, 121K miles. 4.0 auto d30/d35 with 3.55 gearing with 30" tires. Most seem to be 6K to about 15K He was trading it in, and thought 5K was a fair price to ask. I jumped on it.

Last time i changed my transmission fluid, it was full of gold flakes... that made me kind of nervous (brass synchros).

i lucked out, traded a 2003 honda accord with 187000 that needed a new clutch straight up for a 2000 tj annivesary edition with 125000 and engine was replaced (under warranty by the stealership) at 68000. so basically my engine had less than 60000 on it when i got it. i found the deal on craigslist about a year and a half ago.

Why do Wranglers hold their value so well? Things only have value (in that sense) if people want to buy them. Therefore, people must want to buy Wranglers. Why?

My guess is the extremely large aftermarket / modification following. I've heard that Jeep has the largest aftermarket base of any vehicle. Not sure if it's true, but I can't think of any other single vehicle which could have more. Lots of people want to buy Wranglers so they can lift them and go wheelin!

There are a few things you can look for which will reduce the cost of a Wrangler:

1.) 4cyl engine. This usually drops the price by a grand or two.

2.) Soft top / no top - Especially in northern and western states, hard tops are desired and thus soft tops (or no top at all / broken soft top) will drop the price.

3.) High Miles - Apparently, Jeeps can run well into 200k miles, maybe more. I suspect this has more to do with the type of person who would own a 250k Jeep (ie, they constantly fix it), but getting one with close to 200k on the clock will likely drop the price a lot.

4.) Failed modifications - It's pretty popular to mod your Jeep. However mods like lifting, larger tires, new suspensions, etc will often open up a whole mess of problems. Some people fix the problems, some people tolerate the problems, and some just sell the jeep and get something else. That latter category is where you'll find lots of price savings.

I don't know your area specifically, but I'd imagine that you could find a 4cyl TJ with 150 to 200k on the clock for around $5500 pretty easily. Of course there are also miracle deals to be found, if you're willing to patiently hunt...

I live in FL and they are all over the place for sale down here! I bought a '97 TJ with 90k miles with an absolute perfect interior and was bone stock for $4,900... if you are not doing so watch craigslist I find a lot of good deals on there!

A few years ago my wife was looking for a new car and took her '02 S60 Volvo to carmax to get a tradein quote. I forget what they offered, but just for giggles I had the guy crunch the numbers for my '00 Sport. You should have seen the look on my wife's face when my stock jeep was worth almost 2k more than her Swedish POS.

got mine cheap and it ended up needing a good amount of work to get it on the road and safe again. 1997 4cyl manual 80k on replaced motor for $4300. spent $1400 to get it to pass inspection and another $300 on motor mounts a month later when I did the lift. oh, and needed new top to pass imspection as well $350. so, excluding any mods, I spent $6350 for a good running TJ in eastern Pa

the good thing about all of it is you can almost always get most of your money back if you are patient about buying it and selling it if the day comes .

The Ford Mustang holds the crown for the most aftermarket options available, The Chevy 350 engine is in second place, but it's not an actual vehicle... The Jeep CJ is usually pretty high on the list, the TJ is way up there as well, and the JK is making suprising amounts of progress in the aftermarket as well.

I recently purchased an 03 Rubicon for 17K with almost 80k miles on it, but it was the cleanest non molested Rubicon I could find for sale in my area...

For the OP, this isn't really the right time to buy a Jeep, it's the peak of summer, and everyone with a Jeep is out wheeling so they're going to want a lot more for their Jeeps than they would late Fall, Winter, early Spring...

Beat me to it! I'm a Mustangaholic (I've owned 13 in various conditions with the best one being my old 04 Mach 1 which explains my Username) and can attest that you can build an entirely new car out of a catalog! But the Wrangler has to be 2nd as far as complete vehicles go when it comes to the aftermarket. 350s are definitely the #1 engine choice though.

I just bought mine. 97 with western hydraulic plow. second set of rims and tires, 31x10.5 and 30x 9.5'S hard top with 79000 miles. paid 7300
