A Jeep is like a refrigerator on wheels. It's never going to get good mileage.

There is one member here has has some killer ideas on how to make a Jeep more aerodynamic. Maybe he'll post up.

if its a stock jeep and you're getting 13 mpg then there's something wrong, id suspect air sensors that are shot,

even i get 15 mpg and i have 35's and 3.73 gears still and im 17 and dont drive conservativly haha

yeah, and we have that live front axle that is always turning all the way back to the transfer case, but i don't think having lock out hubs that you can disengage would help much...

When mine was stock I got about 16-17mpg. Then an O2 sensor went bad and all of a sudden I was rockin 13. If the O2 is on its way out it still might not trip the light untill the values are way out. When I replaced it, back to 16-17. Just my experience.

Depends, too, on what kind of trips you are taking. I have a stock with an I6 and I used to commute about 20 miles, mostly driving around 40 to 50 mph with few stops and I would get around 18 mpg. Now I drive about 4 miles, often stop and go for about half the way and I get no more than 12 mpg. Engine barely gets warm and uses a lot more gas.

Check your upstream O2 sensor. If that goes bad the Jeep will run rich and kill your gas mileage. They are fairly inexpensive at your local autoparts store and a simple to install. It made a huge difference in my Jeep.

Weird, have a buddy with an '07 and he is constantly complaining about mileage... although he does have a lead foot...

My 2000 I-6 gets 17-19 in town and 20-24 on the freeway (depending on how I drive). If I am feeling aggressive then I might as well be pouring some of the gas on the ground!

don't forget to compensate for larger tires throwing off your mileage in the mpg calculation.

bigger tires register less miles on the odometer, and it's more "off" the faster you go.

Actually they are kinda heavy for there size. Over 3000lbs. Don't forget: fully boxed steel frame, two solid live axles, cast iron block. It ain't no lightweight. Plus it has all the aerodynamics of a barn door.

Also straight sixes seem to not be as efficient as other types of engines. I also would love to keep my brick with the 4.0 no dumb 3.8v6

Take your foot off the skinny pedal and they do just fine. My YJ with 70k on the clock and the 4.0L under the hood does 15-16 like church with 31's.

But then again, I don't think I'm driving a sports car and I actually follow the irritating (to most) shift arrows.

My 2005 Rubicon Unlimmited has gotten 13.5 mpg since I bought it at the dealership with 6 miles on it. It's got 50k on it now, I'm running 4.5" RE short arm and 33" all terrains. It was the same mileage the first 6 mo. with the stock tires and no lift. I have corrected the spedo difference.

Efficiency is more a product of bore/stroke, cam lift/timing, overhead cam vs. push rod set up etc. It has nothing to do with the I6 layout, if it did BMW wouldn't make so many of them every year

I was more implying that most I6's have a longer stroke and alot are pushrod engiens or atleast the older designs do. but your right there are alot of newer I6's like bmw are those ohc?
