Why does my jeep smell like gas? ohh wait...

So I had the fuel tank out of my jeep for about a month and a half and when I reinstalled everything and fired it up I got a strong odor of gas. I went and checked and fuel is coming back down the inside of the clip that connects to the tank, is hitting the pump and then running down the tank.

Is there a seal that may have fallen out of the line or off the pump while I had it out?

And is this something that buying a new piece will fix? Thank you chryster for having an indefinite back order...

Isn't the pump inside the tank? I'm sorry but your question doesn't make sense, but maybe one of the clips is broken. Ford clips will work on a Jeep.

I'd pull the hose off and double check that it was installed correctly. Thse quick connects don't always work the way they are suppose to.

I reinstalled it myself and as far as i know it was on right, although it seemed like there was a good 1/4 inch of play where the line would slide up and down while it was connected.

It may sound wierd but fuel is coming out of the line where it connects to the part of the pump that comes out of the tank. it seems snug when I clip it on, but the way fuel is coming out its almost like the hose is a 3/4 inch nut and the part of the pump it slips onto is a 5/8 inch bolt. it fits, but there is enough room for the fuel to come back out down the inside of the line.

Thats why I was thinking maybe a seal fell out or something.

I would check the fitting on the pump for cracks.

We recently dropped my tank to put my new skid on and one of the things we had to be VERY careful of was not to put too much stress on the fittings as the tank was lowered. It seems that they are somewhat notorious for breaking.

Hopefully this isn't the case because they are pretty expensive to replace.

That could be a possibility too... I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to check that when it dries out a little bit around here. I know a new pump assembly can run up to around $300...

Yes, they are scary expensive.
You should have seen us lowering mine.. got it down just far enough to sneak my hand in there, tore the hide off of some knuckles doing it too.
I'm too cautious sometimes I guess.

Sounds like a seal that is missing, bad or isn't lined up. Had a friend who had this problem.

I measured both openings and both fittings (tank side and frame side) and on the frame side the fitting was 0.325 and the hose was 0.315 inches and on the tank side the fitting was 0.385 and the line was .45 inches, which is what lead me to believe a seal was missing.

the new line is back ordered about a week or so I hope, snow season is coming soon and I dont want to be jeep less for another winter...
