Winch 101

Greetings all,

I am the proud owner of a 98 TJ sport and are looking to do some off roading when the season comes. I am looking to buy a winch because the one time i went i got stuck in my stock rig and now plan to upgrade.

Now I would like to know your setup and what made you choose that specific model, and of how was the install.
Do you prefer hydraulic or electric? How bad does the electric really stress the battery?

And of course, how much was it?(if you don't mind sharing) I'm on a tight budget but know not to get anything under a 8,000lbs rate. Is it ok to buy used?

Thanks all

well i just recently tested out my smittybuilt xrc8 and it worked well for the most part.

the install was super easy. it cost me about $300. i bought it cause i read good reviews on it and i dont do alot of extreme off roading atm that requires alot of winch use. all in all it worked great. it pulled out a 08' 4dr tacoma with no trouble stuck up to its body in snow. had to pull him out about 2-3 times because we kept trying to get through.

only bad thing was it drained my battery hard. i could only winch for about 2-4 second intervals cause my battery gauge would drop way below 9. so i reved the engine the whole time to help with the constant winching. now idk if this is because of the winch or my battery. idk what battery i have in my jeep either its some yellow and black top thing. i might buy a new one soon.

I have owned 5 TJs. Only one of them ever had a winch, and here is how that Jeep (a '97 Sahara) was set up:

That's a Warn XD9000i. I chose it because I wanted more than 8,000 pounds of rated capacity and I wanted a Warn. Okay, there was more: I bought it used from a good friend for dirt cheap. Still, it was exactly what I would have bought new.

As for electrical stress, I was perfectly fine. The Sahara had the 117 amp alternator and already had an aftermarket battery (nothing fancy like an Optima, just a replacement). If I was in for a longer pull, I would just be sure to leave the engine running. I never had any trouble at all.

I feel like the world's biggest tool because I didn't keep that winch when I sold that Jeep, so I refuse to reveal how little I paid. Let's just say this: it was substantially less than that $440 "special" deal on the new Warn 8000 that put this board in a tizzy a few weeks ago.

Since I am currently winchless, you might wonder why I didn't jump on the bandwagon and buy one of those Warn 8000s like numerous other members did. Just as before, I wanted more capacity than the 8000 offers. I'm sure the 8000 is sufficient if all you'll ever do is tug your own Jeep (or another Jeep) out of a mudhole. However, I am likely to use my winch to pull a substantially larger rig out of a tight spot... or up a vertical rock wall... so I want more pulling power. So I am holding out for another XD9000i, even if it costs me twice as much as that 8000.

Is it okay to buy used? Sure, if you are buying a quality product. I'd have no problem buying another used Warn winch.

I have a XRC-8. It does not drain my battery like the above poster.

I got a Superwinch epi9.0 with synthetic line for about $630 through Amazon a year ago. I'm sure they've gone up since then. VERY nice winch. Every bit as good as a Warn IMHO.

The winch plate was another story. Got one from AtoZ with a manufacturing defect that they wouldn't fix (or even acknowledge). Ended up having to modify the plate just to make it bolt in place.

10k of winching power for $400. I got a 2 year mechanical warranty and lifetime electrical warranty and free shipping. Super easy install and very strong so far. Got an optima yellow top to go with it so no battery issues here.

Warn XD9000i. Got it used with an ARB bumper for $9000. LOVE IT. Search your local Craigslist. Try to find one that hasn't been abused though. Warn is the best in the industry and as for everything else, you get what you pay for...

How much pulling power do you think you really need to pull a standard TJ out of most situations?

I have that same winch on mine and love it! You cant beat it for that price. Perfect for someone that uses it every once and while. Grab a snatch block and double that to 20k lbs, pretty damn good

I got one of the Warn 8000lb winches everyone was in a buying frenzy over. I bought it a lil earlier than I wanted because it was a good deal. I just ordered a winch plate from Tomken today and ordered tow straps, tow hooks, and a d-ring hitch mount for the rear from amazon. I should be all set up in a couple weeks. Only thing I didn't get was a snatch block... I may eventually do d-rings in the front but I gotta build a bumper for that first. The hooks will do in the meantime.

Have a superwinch lp8500 and love it. It's Got the lowest amp draw out of all the common winches so it's easiest on your electrical system. I have a factory alternator and optima yellow top with no problems. Love is so far and only complaint is the line speed. Got it at the four wheel jamboree nationals for 375 new. Smittybilt winch plate was 85ish? Good luck
