winch ?

I know it's prob a good idea but how imperative is it to upgrade my battery and alternator when getting an 8k winch? Also is there anything specific I need besides what comes with the winch to run it properly or can I just hook it up and go get stuck?

winch mount plate. and you might want to get a snatch block and some tree saver ropes

You don't "need" to get a different battery/alternator IF you don't plan on doing long stretches of winching. What you can do is either increase your idle RPM's or get it all mounted in the cab to control it from there and just give a little gas when winching.

If you have a bunch of high powered lights, you risks draining your battery too low and significantly decreasing it's service life.(also you could end up needing a jump if you cut your engine off right after a recovery) Just go pick up a Dakota 136 amp alternator from an auto yard, and you'll be set.

By "Dakota" do you mean that as a brand or to get an alternator out of a dakota pickup?

I looked at the upgraded alternators that they sell in Quadratec but they are pretty proud of them.

No need for a beefed up alternator. The biggest alternator that can be fit into a TJ still won't be able to keep up with a winch, the key is a good battery. But no need to buy a new battery right away either, just run what's in there until it finally goes bad and then install a battery that is better for winching like the new Diehard Platinum or Odyssey. With 182,000 miles on my TJ with lots of winching, I'm still running my original alternator but my battery is a Sears Diehard Platinum 34-78DT.

will the difference in the stock 90 amp and the dakota 136 amp be enough difference to help with offroad lights and a winch? Not really planning on doing a ton of winching, in fact chances are i will never use it, just there if i need it. But i do plan on adding 4 KC lights up front so want to make sure my alternator wont leave me stranding after running those lights for an extended amount of time.

I used to really like Optima batteries, I had two Yellow Tops and my last one was a Blue Top I replaced with the Diehard Platinum two months ago. I gave up on Optima because they kept failing prematurely on me. Optima batteries used to be great but their quality (especially lead purity) dropped when they were purchased by Johnson Controls. Many former Optima battery enthusiasts users have gone on to other batteries, me included. Speaking of the Optima, the Red Top is not a good winching battery (Optima will void the warranty if a winch is connected to a Red Top) but the Yellow Top and D34M Blue Top are suitable for a winch... if you REALLY want to run an Optima.

Mind if i ask what the diehard battery cost? I usually buy diehards for my regular truck since i dont have a winch or any offroad lights, it is just a regular truck. I have had great luck with them but just wondering how much more the platinum would be?

The Diehard Platinum is not cheap, I think I spent $170 or maybe $180 for it. The Diehard Platinum, Odyssey, Optima, Exide Orbital, and ProComp batteries are all AGM (absorbed glass mat) which is a solid cell construction (no hanging lead plates) that is extremely resistant to damage from shock or vibration. If it's for a street truck, it's probably not worth paying extra for an AGM type battery. But for offroading where shock and vibration can be expected, going for an AGM battery is a good idea.

I wasn't aware there are so many choices for AGM's. How many years are you getting out of them? Just wondering because my 04 still has the OE battery. Thanks for the info and sorry for the hijack.

I think the most I got out of any of my three optimas was maybe three years, not much for such an expensive battery. Plus I had to throw them on the charger more than I thought was acceptable. That's why I finally gave up on Optima batteries.

This is some real good info Jerry. My OE battery in my 03 is starting to show signs of failure and I was going to go pick up a yellow top sometime this week but now I have to rethink what type I get.

I bought my first red top about two months ago. It failed about two weeks later. But with the money I spent on it, I wanted it replaced. Took it up to Advanced Auto, they tested it and replaced it. I am interested to see how long this one will last. I have a a Warn 9000xi so I will see.

From what Jerry said earlier, it looks like the red top isnt a good choice for your winch battery

Yeah no sh!t. I guess I am still living in the near past, when every one wanted one. This post should have come out sooner. Oh well, I will just keep taking them back til' I feel I got my 200$ out of them.haha Then go from there. Not my fault their quality went to shizzz. With a Z

Im not a pro or anything I would install a new battery. On my 98TJ I installed a high output alternator, which goes to an isolator, then I have two batteries one to run the stock electrical system, then a second to run my winch, KC lights, and my emergency radio.

Bubba Army representing. Been for a long time. I used to listen to him back in Orlando. XL106.7 days. I still remember when they kicked him off the air then. I was at the BMX track when it happened.haha

Did I kill this thread. I hope not. I am now concerned with this red top. I wonder also if I can get my money back if this one fails too. I am not playing with unpredictable batteries. Living across the street from my local Advanced Auto is great if it fails here, but on the trail = not cool. With the clay we have here and the combination of club rides. Winches get used quite frequently.
