Do a little researching. Tons of threads about this topic. Most will say warn 8000# is one of the best but I couldn't afford it so I went with the engo 9000# and it's been solid so far (only used once). Might use it today though, checking out a new teail

I have a smittybilt X20 8 comp with synthetic line. I have tortured it for over a year and it is still working great. Most recently I uprooted 4 trees. Some so large they dragged my jeep all 4 tires locked across concrete then up and over a curb. People here can call it shittybilt or Chinese junk all they want. It's a well made beast that's proven it self to me. $550 on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004K2...110_SY165_QL70

The only reason they have warn winches is because they bought them on CL for $300. That smittybuilt can do some damage.

I've not been here that long but lemme just warn you....you may as be asking what color you should paint your Jeep or, what type of beer should I buy at the store.

If you haven't already, do your searches on winches on this forum first. You may have a lot of reading to do...

There are some cheap shoddy winches for sale and it's my strongest possible personal opinion that the Smittybilt is among the worst where reliability and quality is concerned. That opinion comes from many years of offroading on trails where winches are required and not there for decoration as so many really are. The more difficult the trail and the better built the Jeep is, the less you will find cheap $300 winches and the more you will find good quality reliable winches like from Warn.

Go for a cheap winch only if it's there mostly for looks or for very occasional or rare use.

I use the cheap Harbor Freight winches for loading logs on trailer all the time and no issues so far.

I just picked up a Superwinch TS 9500. I ordered it from Northern Tool and had it shipped to the store. Now all I gotta do is get a new bumper to mount it on. Woohoo spending money never stops.

I bought a Warn 8274 that was seized up. I totally rebuilt it, mounted 150' of syn line for less than $800.

Actually, the only reason I paid $300 for my Warn is because I bought it on CL. Otherwise, I would have saved up some more money.

I've seen firsthand this damage that you speak. The powdered metal (sintered) drivegear is a joke under stress. I guess those machined hardend steel gears are tooo expensive.

You don't need to justify buying a quality winch. Even a used one is better than the Chinese junk.

I'm not justifying. I'm just pointing out that Willy's logic is flawed.

I have a Warn PowerPlant on my TJ that has never been used. Well, except for the compressor. It is on my Jeep because it was delivered to my office. My brother had ordered it and sent to my office. He told me it was mine. Thought he was joking, but he wasn't. Brand new in the box!

I will use it on the ranch more than anything. He uses his quite often and it has been solid. I did buy the Warn cover for both of us. He had an old faded one. I will remove mine during the summer. My brother has never had an issue with overheating due to airflow problems that some have had with this winch.

The only thing I wish I had was a wireless remote but with the wire i dont have to sorry about dead batteries or anything and it will reach all the way inside. Pulling trees, pulling trucks and pulling myself all has been no problems.

Get a good roller fairlead, gloves, tree saver, and some pulley blocks and you will be set. Maybe synthetic rope in the future but I have had no problems with the wire rope so far except the metal splinters if I forget my gloves.

That's what I just said. The only reason people have $1200 warn wenches is because they got then on craigslist.

I'm in the market for a winch sometime soon and I've heard about warn, HOWEVER, I am not spending that much money on a winch. So you can talk all the shit you want about me and Smittybuilt. Have fun saving up.

And I am saying that you are incorrect. And now you are making up numbers to prove a flawed point. In my case, I would have ended up with a brand new Warn M8000 for around $6-700 rather than the $1000 XD9000 that I bought used for $300.

So you don't even have a winch and you are posting advice or your .02

Wow your credibility just went south.

I didn't give advice on winches. My first comment was defending the guy that posted about smittybuilt then you started talking shit about me and my opinions. My advice is read all the comments and chill bro. Im not some stupid kid and you don't know anything about me. Thank you for your time and I'm sorry we ruined this thread with high school, real housewives bickering. Have a great evening.

I have done way harder things with my smittybilt x20 8 than any hardcore off roader. Unlimited money for mods = same for a winch. I like reviews a lot. Mine has good ones. Some smittybilt stuff not so much like the XRC winch. Tearing out root balls that drag your jeep tires locked over concrete is harder than pulling it over a rock to go over a rock. I wanted function and I got it. I've read more about used warns (why are people selling them?) and rebuilding warns (for the cost of a new smittybilt) why they need rebuilt? Here it's common. Guess it's easy to jump on the band wagon. My winch is awesome. I'd say don't buy a warn you will want to sell it used at a loss or rebuild it based on what I have read on here. twist stuff however you like. It's easy.

Dragging a a Jeep is easy. As soon as surface tension is broken is slides. Yes it will leave black marks on the concrete but your Jeep weighs less than 5K and it takes much less than that to drag it. Yes pulling stumps is hard.

All winches will break. ALL. When they do I want one I can fix. I want one I can call and get parts for quickly.

The Warn winch I rebuilt is 35 years old. Some bearings, seals and couple solenoids and good as new. Yes it takes some work. Many people don't like to get a bit greasy or have the smarts to rebuild one. That's ok too.

I'm glad you like your winch. It looks great on your Jeep.
