winch problem

I have a warn x8000i and when I went to switch it to free spool this weekend the handle would not budge. Has anyone had this happen before, or what could be the problem.

New Warn winches manual engage handles are pretty stiff for the first few hundred uses.

Get a pipe (like from a bottle jack) and try some extra leverage. Not so much you'd break something if it's stuck. Also, try connecting the winch controller and running the cable OUT for a second and try again.

Well I found this out when I was getting ready to pull a bronco out of a mud hole this weekend. He was sunk to his axle's, the winch worked great and pulled him out but it was just more work for the winch not being able to free spool.

Something else to check is the cable itself. If it got bound up in the winch it could be the cause also as it may be putting pressure on the drum and not allowing the switch to disengage.

Try running it out manually.

By manually u mean without the remote right? Cause its locked in the engaged position and it will not budge without the remote. I hope I dont look like a complete dumb*** .

I did after I pulled that guy out and still nothing. The bad thing is I bought this winch off ebay a few years back from a guy who was getting a divorce, and it was new but all I got was the winch. So The way I understand warn's policy is you have to be the original owner to get the warranty.

So the winch cable runs out? If so, grab a bar and try to rotate it with some extra leverage.

I thought it was normal for them to be hard to engage and disengage.Mine has been that way since it was new.I don't have a Warn but my Atlas is really hard.Even though you are not supposed to do it I have to toggle the remote just to get my lever to move at all.As a matter a fact the free spool levers on both winches on my tow truck are even worse.I have to use a rubber mallet on them to free spool and then again to lock back in.

My 6k warn winch was really hard at first but now it's pretty easy.
