Winch Recovery

I need advice on recovery using a winch. Is it OK to recover a TJ from one if the stock tow hooks by attaching the winch hook to the tow hook itself? Or should I add a recovery strap connecting the two hooks together? I'm not sure if its ok to use a D ring, snatch block or the winch hook directly to a tow hook, being metal on metal. The recovered TJ wouldn't have D rings on it like you might see on an aftermarket bumper. Thanks.

you'll be fine hooking to the tow hook. a winch wont jerk you the way another jeep pulling would. thats why people use snatch straps, absorb the shock from a jerky pull. a winch however is much easier pulling much slower and more gradual.

Just make sure that the winch hook is on there really good, the factory tow hooks have a real small hoop and I've seen straps slip off of them, you don't want that thing slipping off and flying back at you.

Thanks for the help. Does anyone know where I could get a D ring type mount that would replace the stock tow hook and fit in that location? It sounds like that would be a safer set up. It's a stock bumper so I don't know where else would be a good place to install d rings up front,

One of these is a good cheap alternative too, it's got a bigger hook that keeps straps and stuff secure.

x2.. those are the only tow hooks to have. you can get a set for $20, or less, and they're much better than factory hooks.
