winches

Okey I'm looking for a good quality winch but don't want to spend the money on a warn. Everything I've looked at is half the price of a warn. There has to be some good ones out there

3 years ago I got an XRC8 on CL for $100 . I tore it down, checked and cleaned every thing, used a good lithium based grease and reassembled... added synthetic line, done dozens of short pulls, it's slower than Moses, and noisy as hell, but it works. However,, when my jeep budget allows, or it fails, whichever comes first, I'll be getting a Warn,,

I bought the Engo E10000 /synthetic line about a year and a half ago based on this winch-off by Four-Wheeler.com.
Massive Multi-Winch Shootout - Four Wheeler Magazine

I could not be happier with my choice. It has served me well (and my friends) on the trail, around the yard, and even at work! In my opinion I think they over-rated the Warn in this competition.

Rugged Ridge 8.5 is a good winch, Ive used it to pull a long bed f150 that was sitting on its frame out of a ditch. That truck weighed twice what my jeep weighs, and I didn't notice much of a change in line speed.

Warn isn't just a name, like my Redwing or Vasque boots, they are much more than just a name, as each has earned their worldwide reputation by building quality products for generations.. Only two other winch brands come close to Warn, Ramsey and Superwinch .. All the others that are currently enjoying big market shares with the off road American crowd are cheap knockoffs made in china and most likely come from the same one or two manufacturing plants with different name tags on them..

I would personally buy only a warn or ramsey. Tripple A uses ramsey winches, and my dad had one for years and it was magic. Both are expensive though so get ready to cry yourself to sleep

Remember, when you have the security of having a winch, you tend to go places you wouldn't think going without a winch, when that winch doesn't work when you need it, your usually in a place called: up s&@t creek without a paddle.
When you really depend on a product to work, don't go cheap. If you need floor mats, go ahead and buy the pep boys brand, if you need a winch, buy a warn.

I see a winch much like safety gear on my boat. Sure, I could have saved a few hundred dollars by going cheap on my life jackets, flares, EPIRBS, etc, but when you really need something to work, don't try to save a few dollars. I just bought a Warn m8000 on Amazon for under $600. I hope I never truely need it, but if I do, I know it will work.

X2. Warn earned their solid reputation by providing reliable high quality products for over 50 years. It was in fact asinine to infer Warn's good name wasn't earned.

For example... look at a company like today's Smittybilt who has zero connection with the original Smittybilt company. The organization now using Smittybilt's name only bought the right to use the name and became a Chinese importer instead of a U. S. manufacturer like the original Smittybilt was before old man Smitty died and the company name was purchased by investors.

Today's Smittybilt BOUGHT their name from Smitty's family and is simply cashing in on the original Smittybilt's sterling reputation. The only thing in common between the original Smittybilt and today's Smittybilt is the name and logo. That's it. Warn, on the other hand, earned their good name and reputation over many years of manufacturing high quality products.

Same here, only I got the XD9000. It's in very good condition and works great. If you can't afford to buy a good one new, get a used one. They're in the classifieds on Pirate4x4 all the time.

It seems every time a thread pops up about which winch to buy the warn fanatics put down every other winch.
Warn isn't the end all be all of winches, every winch will have its share of problems at some time or another.

Check this 6 page thread of warn winches causing fires!!

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f27/f...-winch-961538/

Just because the winch doesn't say warn, doesn't mean it's junk. Some less expensive winches can run reliably for years.

How are the Ramsey winches priced in the US?

One of our renowned 4x4 outfitters over here refuse to sell anything but Ramsey or Warn.

I have a Ramsey BTW. Only 6000lbs but with a snatch block and some straps it is pretty powerfull.

I went through this a couple months ago. I bought my TJ to hunt and fish out of. If I ever use my winch I will probably be alone. The cheap chinese winches were $300 plus shipping. I bought a Warn M8000 for $582 (autoplicity.com) shipped to my door.
I love a bargain, but for $250 I'm not going to risk not having the better piece of gear, especially for something this important.

Obviously you didn't read my first post.. What I have now was a bargain I couldn't refuse... Will that winch be on the front of my jeep when we go to Alaska in a few short years? I think not. Even if the XRC is reliable beyond belief, which it has been for three years, the time will come to replace it, and I don't want to be stuck in the mud several hundred miles from anywhere without a smooth operating reliable winch, that if necessary, I can rebuild on the spot because I had the foresight to bring spare parts that might break... Try getting a rebuild kit for any except Warn, Ramsey, or Superwinch.. I'm not knocking on the budget winches, as they do serve a purpose, for the weekend warrior, I just wouldn't trust them on a very, very, long range excursion.

So Ramsey and superwinch are just as good as warn.
the only fillings I've had with winches is on my ATV. One came with a warn and the other came with a Ramsey they both outlasted the atvs they were on. The Ramsey was about a hundred dollies cheeper.

I can't go along with that though I'd rather have a Ramsey or one of the two Superwinch models still made in the US, their X9 or S9000, than any Chinese winch. Superwinch now imports all of their other winches from China.

so what about Ramsey winches? I am also very interested, yes I know warns are great but their price is not. theres an ATV dealer here that deals Ramseys though and he gang get a 9000lb for only 489. if people on here give high opinions of Ramseys I'd be inclined to buy one at that price. but seems like the only thing anybody on this site runs are warns.

Ramsey quality is very good and they are U.S. made. My sole gripe with Ramsey is their warranty reputation is not as good as Warn's. I have a friend I wheeled with for nearly ten years and when something happened to his still fairly new Ramsey and he tried to get it fixed under warranty, they accused him of abusing the winch and denied warranty coverage. Warn wouldn't have denied warranty coverage, their repuation for fixing problems goes well beyond what is in writing on their warranty.

fair enough. I think I personally will go with the Ramsey then. cuz for the price of the comparable warn, at least in my area, I can nearly get 2 Ramseys.

I've had an XRC8 for a couple of years now and although its been fine the few times I've used it, I'm looking to replace it soon with a Warn. The XRC will soon go on my car hauler trailer where it will work fine.

If you guys a re looking to save some $$, then look at the VR series winches that Warn now offers. A Warn rep I recently spoke to said the only difference between the VR series and their Premium series is the internals. The VRs just use the old technology that Warn has used forever and not the new hi-tech switches, diodes etc., that the new stuff has.

Warn VR8000 #86245

What I'm looking at....

9.5cti: 12V Winch
