Worth it?

I didn't find any threads on this one, is it worth it to change out a 5 speed to an auto? A friend is selling his 97 4.0, super clean, original owner, never off-road, but it's a manual. This is a must for me, so if i get can it cheap enough, plus knowing the history, does it make sense? Or just keep looking?

Lot of $$$ and work goes into a manual to auto conversion. Wire harness, ECM, drive shafts, shifter, pedal removal/install, oil coolers, transmission mounts...

If you have two same year and model jeeps to swap parts with makes it a little easier.

Seriously should consider just buying a new jeep with an auto.

Im with Sticks. Lots of work and hassle to do the switch when you could just buy one already set up that way for roughly the same cost as a manual.

Did the conversion on my dad's Datsun 280Z from automatic to manual. Never thought I would get it out of the shop. Worked great, but very involved and expensive.

There are a ton of Jeeps out there. And the automatics are everywhere now days. Unless he is going to give it to you, I agree--just find another Jeep that is already an automatic.

Don't do it. The 4 cylinder and automatic transmission are not a good match. You will probably regret it

Ok, that's kinda what I was thinking. 4 cylinder is out the question, as is 5 speed. I'll keep looking!

Another alternative is to look for a totaled auto jeep in a salvage yard that is the same year and model as yours...or find one with a blown engine and swap out your engine into the auto then part your old one out.

If you wheel, the auto is well worth the swap.
