I have a 98 TJ 4.0 5spd, looking to boost horsepower, looking at Banks air intake, & exhaust. Is it worth the cash?? or are there better ways to boost power?
Sorry the intake or exhaust will not help you with horsepower. Exhaust will only make it sound better and the intake will do nothing except make it sound worse. If you have larger tires regear to get some horsepower back.
Don't waste your hard-earned $$$. No matter how good the hype sounds, it's not going to help the TJ's performance. The TJ's air intake is not restricted by the OE air intake anyway, it was specifically (!) designed to be free breathing. It can, in fact, easily flow more air than the engine can consume at wide-open throttle and redline rpms. And besides, at anything less than wide-open throttle, the throttle body's butterfly valve plate is the sole restriction to air flow to the engine so the air intake isn't robbing the engine of any performance whatsoever.
As stated above dont waste your money. I ended up replacing my exhaust only because there was a hole in the factory muffler. The intake was just a spur of the moment but that did nothing but make it sound better. The only gain in power I got was when I regeared.
My Aem intake and banks exhaust helped me out tremendously, here is why though. My old catalytic converter was so clogged up that I was bogged down on power, I couldn't even redline and it almost felt like it was firing on not all cylinders. After replacing the whole exhaust and putting in a high flow cat it was like a brand new jeep again. I don't think the intake was worth the money though that's for sure, the exhaust did help me out though plus the sound is amazing, can't beat it.
Thanks for the input. I don't think I am ready to jump to the 8, I just can't see taking out a perfectly good engine. It just seems sacrilegious. I am going to do the exhaust, even if the HP doesn't boost I like the sound and I want the chrome pipe.
