Would a cold air intake invalidate the factory warranty?

Greetings and thank you for your time in reading this.

I just bought my first Jeep, a 2006 Wrangler X. Got it for 20k out the door, 4.0, 6 speed, hard top, AC, couldn't pass it up.

First question as above, would using a cold air intake invalidate the factor warranty? If not, any recommendations to which brand/type?

Second question: What is the largest tire I can use that will fit stock (for now) and will not rub and will actually still fit on the factory mount with the tail light?

I don't know about the intake, but you should be able to run 31s with no problems.

as far as the warranty goes, you're going to run into different answers evey time because every dealer handles things differently. so, i would grab a dozen donuts, and maybe some coffee and one morning run up to your dealer and have a talk with the head of service(or whoever would have power over warranty work) and see what he says you can do before voiding the warranty.


oh!!....and get it in writing as well.

yea, thats a good idea but i think you can install a cold air intake without voiding the warranty...they have to fix what ever is broken as long as the aftermarket part didn't cause it...which you shouldn't have any problems with a cold air intake...and as far as brand...K&N is a very good brand...and you should be able to run 31's with no problem...but if u need a lil clearance you can always get rubi coil springs for a lil more clearance and lift...oh and congrats on the new jeep i got the EXACT same...2006 x model, 6 speed, ac, hard top, exactly the same and paid about $20,000 also so congrats!

Thank you all for your time in replying...

Looks like 15x8, 31x10.5. Going with American Racing.

I'll take your advice on that and will also head down to have a nice talk with the head of the service department at the local Jeep shop concerning covered mods.

BF Goodrich?

Not sure, BigJeep. What do you recommend? I want something with a bit of traction but not TOO ridiculous to drive on the road...

BFG Mud Terrain

I know you were asking bigjeep, but yes, that is a good all use tire. Many people use them, they have good road manners, and are very decent off road.

They also have a good side lip that helps protect your rims.

The Goodyear MT/R is also an excellent dual purpose tire for on and off road manners. Good tough sidewalls and tread pattern for wheeling and very good/quiet manners on the road. They will last a looooooong time if you rotate them properly.

Our Rubicon came with those, MT/R's, and I liked the traction they had, but they wore very quickly, and unevenly. I don't know why they came with E rated tires, but I rotated them every 3,000 and finally gave them away when I bought the Claws. The Claws are doing much better, than the Goodyears, IMO.

Hmmm, that's weird. I've seen guys get 50k miles out of a set of MT/R's. My Claws wouldn't come close to that. Of course I keep cutting sidewalls and such on them.

i've looked at both tires and i have a couple buddies with the bfg muds and will prolly go with them...i like the way they perform on and off the road and i like the look...and the MT/R's are too expensive for me anyway...im gonna go with 31 bfg muds...im savin up and i got $500 with $250 to go...and im gettin a job when i get back from vacation...im typing this in the resort now...lol...so when i get the money im gonna get the rubi coil springs and the muds...i cant wait!

Voiding the Warranty

Regarding the chance of voiding the warranty, take a look at the "Voiding Warranty" post on the other half of the TJ side - "TJ General Discussion." There's been a lot of good information posted there, especially info on the legal obligations involved including a federal law protecting your warranty. The bottom line is that, unless the aftermarket addition is the actual cause, the warranty remains valid. Hope this helps. As to the aftermarket cold air intake, I have a Rock-It Air tube and filter from Turbo City. I've had it for over 2 years now and love it. Noticeable power increase and greater mpg.

If you talk to the dealer and it does void the warranty, you can always keep the stock box and put it back on when you go to the dealer. It only takes about 30 minutes to swap them out. I bought a Brute Force intake and it came with a throttle body spacer for about $230. It is great and I would highly reccomend it.
