would i be dumb not to get of of these?

sorry in advance for the long post... i'm new so i have a lot of questions. in time i'll actually be able to contribute something worthwhile on here.

anyway, while in the middle of the search for my perfect jeep, 2 have come up somewhat locally that i am going to try to look at.... one has come up in my search for a few weeks and the other just came up this afternoon and almost sounds too good to be true.

here are the descriptions from autotrader...

==========
jeep 1 (at small dealership, 1 man operation): 2002 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4x4. 4.0 6 Cylinder, 5 Speed Manual Transmission, AC, CD, Tilt, Cruise, Delay Wipers, Softtop only, 1 Owner. Very clean in and out. Runs and drives excellent.

burgundy/tan, 116k miles, asking 6999.
==========

OOORRRRR....

==========
jeep 2 ('03, new as of this afternoon, private sale): EXTRA CLEAN WRANGLER!!! X PACKAGE WITH A SOFT TOP AND HARD TOP(W/ REAR DEFROST & WINDSHIELD WIPER). OTHER OPTIONS INCLUDE THE UNBEATABLE 4.0 INLINE 6 CYLINDER ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION, TIRE COVER, AND SOUNDBAR. BRAND NEW SEAT COVERS!!! NON SMOKING VEHICLE. POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL NERF BARS

gold/tan, 54k miles, asking 4800.
==========

both cars look like they're in pretty good shape based on the pictures, but i'm leery of the 54k miles and the low price. i emailed the seller asking if the car has a clean title and if it has a few additional features, but i haven't heard back yet (only been an hour or so... "a watched pot never boils")...

let's say both cars are legit, both great shape. would i be dumb to not get the '03? the sahara is the more optioned of the two, has nicer wheels, i like the color better... but it only has 1 top, higher miles, and is a year older.

i think 6999 for the sahara is a decent price anyway and there's probably either a typo or a scam with the X, but with options now i don't know what to think!!

i just really want to have tilt, ac, and ABS if possible. if the X is for real maybe i'll just see about adding those myself.

so.... any thoughts?? what would you choose?

Both of those sound like very low prices for what you are looking at. I would insist on a carfax and having a mechanic thoroughly check either before buying. That said, maybe people are just over reacting to the lousy gas mileage that wranglers get, and trying to get out from under them.

But the low price for each of them throws up a red flag for me.

That 03' sounds like a great deal. Too good, actually it sounds like it has a branded or rebuilt/restored title. That hardtop alone new is $1500.00 so that is a plus. The accesories don't really total up to be that much. That sound bar comes stock on tj's so not really an added feature. If you do look at and they tell you that the jeep has been rolled and then restored, check under the roll bar padding for stress cracks. I would check there whether they tell you it has been rolled or not. Check it out, Carfax is a great tool, except it doesn't always tell you everything, becuase some people don't tell their insurance what happened. Good Luck, Hope you drive away with something that you truly love.

thanks for the replies so far. i'm a realistic kind of person, so in my head i'm pretty sure there's something up with it but i'm also holding out hope that it's someone freaking out about gas or something like that. i'd definitely run a carfax beforehand but still realize it's not a sure thing.

if this was just a regular '03 X and a '02 sahara with comparable prices, would it be worth it to get the newer X over the older sahara, or are there options on the sahara that would make it worth getting that one? i haven't really been able to find a list of exactly what makes the sahara that much better.

I don't think they are real. Only thing that might make the sahara a better pick would be if it had the dana 44 rear axle, which has a metal drain plug in the differ cover vs the weaker dana 35 and its plastic plug. But for the price difference you can swap a 44 in, might have to change gears though.

If you are buying a Jeep to go offroading, then I would look to see if either of those have the optional and much stronger Dana 44 rear axle upgrade and if one does, go with that one. The standard Dana 35c rear axle is "adequate" for easy trails but if you envision large tires and tougher trails, you'll definitely want the much stronger Dana 44 rear axle.

How to tell: Look at the rear axle's differential cover. If it is perfectly oval-shaped and it has a black plastic snap-in cover in the fill hole half-way up the cover, that is the weaker Dana 35c. If the cover is more stop-sign shaped and has a silver-colored threaded in bolt in the fill hole, it has the optional extra-cost Dana 44.

The below chart shows what they look at. The photo shows what happens when a Dana 35c breaks from running tires that were too big or having installed a locker into the axle which is a nice thing to have for improving how well a Jeep does offroad. In that photo, the Dana 35c's axleshaft broke which allowed the broken axleshaft and the tire that was attached to it to slide partially out of the housing.

Those aren't that crazy of deals. My girlfriends step father just bought a '99 with 70k miles, a soft top, hard top, full doors and half doors, a 2" lift and 31's for $5400.

Jerry,
I was just checking my differential with the info you provided above. Mine is the more stop sign shaped cover, and it does have the threaded bolt in the fill hole, but the bolt is not silver, it is black. Does that matter at all? Is it still a Dana 44? I have 33x12.50's on there right now, and I don't want to end up like this guy in the picture.

No worries and congrats, you have a Dana 44. The bolt just got painted somehow.

yes, thanks for the illustration... very helpful.

update: went to check out the 02. drove 90 min to get there, get out of the car only to find out 30 sec later that it has a salvage title. would have been nice to mention on the phone when i asked him about the status of the title. he kinda glossed over the title status by telling me how clean the car was. i heard the word "clean" in the response to the title and without thinking i assumed he meant the title... not the interior. car was in good shape, not much rust, but had been hit in the front and the drivers side frame had been bent/straightened. i'm sure it's fine, but i'd rather not start out with a salvage title.

'03: heard back from the seller. apparently "the woman just finalized a divorce and the jeep was left to her, but she has no interest in it." she'd prefer that i pay for the car using Ebay payment services because she has a purchase protection account for $20k and if i gave her my name and address she'd initiate the transaction. how nice of her. i told her i'd be glad to pay for it using ebay as long as i can see the car first and get a physical bill of sale. i know this is typically how scams work, so i'm gonna keep playing email tag and see how far i can get with this just for kicks i guess. who knows, maybe this is the one legit divorce case where the seller actually does just want a secure money transaction. we'll see

after telling the seller that i'd gladly pay for it through ebay if i could see it first they replied with "the car is in a crate in california at ebay's headquarters waiting to ship out. send the money to an escrow account and the car will be shipped to you. if you like it, the money will then be transferred to me [seller]. the entire process would be monitored closely by ebay."

hmmm.... now why would ebay go out of their way to monitor a sale that's not being made on their site? this scam isn't even fun anymore. next.

Yep, that's definately a scam. Stay the hell away from it! They use differents sites like Ebay, AutoTrader, etc. to scam people out of thousands. Most all fo them use phony Escrow companies and fabricated contact info. among other easy thieving tools. If you ever do something like that, it is very likely you will NEVER see your money again, regardless what authority you contact about it.

Good luck in your search, and be careful. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Take care.

yeah usually scams are at least funny. When i sold my old car (kbb value over 7k) some guy replied to me that he wanted to trade for an old 91 crx.. How stupid do these people have to be?

I wouldn't buy either. Jeep never offered yellow or gold with tan inside on a 2003 X, so something has been redone. Do some more shopping and try and get the things you want in your Jeep when you first buy it. Like the Dana 44.
